[Special Feature] Impressed by Sungkyunkwan University's philosophy and culture that values "innovation" and "us". <Professor Seo Ah-young>
Our business school has a core value of education. We are strengthening our research capabilities, and we are striving to cultivate talent for student success and future value creation. To this end, four new teachers were appointed in the first semester of the 2020 school year, and the majors were management (two), management information (one), and accounting (one) were invited as highly competent teachers in each field. I met "Professor Seo Ah-young" of <Management Information Major >, a new teacher who became a family member of a business school, and listened to "major research activities, majors, and future plans."
Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you! Please introduce yourself, professor.
Good morning. Nice to meet you. I have worked as an assistant professor and associate professor at Hong Kong Municipal University for the past 7 years. The School of Creative Media, where I belong, aims to foster innovative and creative talent by combining arts, science and engineering. I conducted classes and research that combine science, technology, and art there.
For example, in information visualization classes, students were asked to combine statistical analysis of data with artistic expression to create an infographic. This approach is possible when combining information extracted from data analysis with graphics, animation, visualization technology, storytelling techniques, and so on, allowing students to learn analytical thinking, engineering skills, and art and design at the same time.
Through the process of developing and teaching convergence education programs, I realized that creative destruction is needed even in the traditional boundaries of learning. Social scientists, engineers, philosophers, and artists use different academic perspectives and methodological approaches, but they also realize that they are looking at different parts of the problem to solve the same problem. I'm currently working with researchers in computer-human interaction, game research, and computer science.
Q2. Please introduce your major briefly, and what made you choose your major?
My major is management information system. After majoring in humanities in the undergraduate department, I became aware of the importance of information technology while working as an analyst at a foreign bank called Credit Suisse. I became interested in the field of management information system after seeing information technology replace the banking review business, which was considered the most necessary part of human-specific analytical thinking.
Our society today has become so profound that the impact of information technology is incomparable to what I felt 20 years ago. In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, which is dominated by topics such as innovation through information technology, digital transformation, and co-existence of machines and people, I think the importance of the field of management information systems has grown even more. Management information system is the field of understanding organizations and societies that are transformed into technology and studying ways that technology and humans can coexist. By understanding and predicting changes in the rapidly changing technical environment, I think the main goal of our major in management information systems is to suggest that humans can better adapt to such environments and use technology more effectively.
Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University Business School and what you plan to do in the future.
I'm very happy and excited to have the opportunity to research and work with great professors and excellent students at Sungkyunkwan University's School of Business. Although the semester started not long ago, I was impressed by Sungkyunkwan University's philosophy and culture that values "innovation" and "we." As a member of Sungkyunkwan University's business school, I will try to contribute to the development of schools and departments.
Q4. Could you briefly introduce your class?
My subject this semester is the management information system. This class explores how information systems combine the labor of machines and human labor to drive innovation and gain competitive advantage. Discuss the business impact of information technology such as virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, robots, automation, and the Internet of Things. I emphasize that in this class we deal with information technology topics, but the key lies in understanding people. After all, innovation due to technology must be understood from a human-centered perspective of human life and happiness.
That's why my first class starts with a question: "What are the unique characteristics of distinguishing human beings from machines?" "Are we already cyborgs?" I think exploring these essential problems is the starting point for understanding the impact of information technology.
Q5. What are your plans for future research?
I'm studying how user experience affects cognitive performance in a technology-mediated virtual space. The concept of virtuality is ideal, but at the same time implies a feasible possibility. Recently, we have been working with industry practitioners, computer-human interaction researchers, and game researchers to empirically explore the innovation and business impact of virtual reality (VR) technology, and the impact on individuals' feelings and perceptions. From now on, I would like to suggest insightful implications for humans, technology, and society through convergence research between various academic institutions.
