Business School is strengthening education and research capabilities that are core values of our university, and is striving to foster talent for student success and future value creation. To this end, we hired four new teachers with outstanding capabilities in each field in the first semester of 2021, and their majors are marketing (1), management information (1), accounting (1), and finance (1). We met Professor Yoo Joon-wook of Accounting Major, a new teacher who became a family of Business school this time, and listened to "major research activities, majors, and future plans."
Q1. Hello Professor, Nice to meet you! Please introduce yourself.
I have taught accounting at California State University, Marshall University and Winnipeg University in Canada, and I have been teaching at Sungkyunkwan University since this semester. I'm happy to work at Sungkyunkwan University with great professors with a long tradition.
Q2. Please introduce your major briefly, and why did you choose your major?
Accounting is the study of providing information about various forms of organizations, including businesses and non-profit organizations, with validity and reliability. Members of business, investors, and regulators demand a variety of information based on different needs, and the accounting system must satisfy these needs. I was fascinated by accounting’s down-to-earth characteristic compared to other areas of Business Administration.
Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting at Sungkyunkwan University Business school and your future plans.
Sungkyunkwan University is a high ranking research institution not only in Asia but also in the world, so I am honored to work as a teacher. I want to make good research results by doing new research in the field I'm interested in.
Q4. Please briefly introduce your class.
In this semester, I am teaching ‘Introduction to managerial accounting’ in English. It is a subject which study concepts and techniques that managers of companies and non-profit organizations must know to make effective decisions.
Q5. What are your future research plans?
I'm currently working on taxes. In particular, I do research on the progressiveness and investment of taxes and asset prices.
Q6. Please tell us about your ideal educator.
When I am in class, I can notice that there is an unexpectedly large deviation in one class. I don't think that a student always makes a bad grade when he or she makes a bad grade once. They often experience personal difficulties and temporarily fail to produce results. I give a lecture thinking not only of the top students but also of the middle and lower students. Also, I would like to provide a helpful education in the long-run for students, even though the meeting with me is brief (one or two semesters).
Q7. If you have anything you want to say to students who study hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them!
When you study in college, you spend time with people of similar ages and interests, but when you go to society, you have to socialize with people of variety ages and discuss and satisfy various interests. It's not easy to communicate smoothly with various people, so I think it'd be good to prepare in advance. One way to recommend, reading economic journals from time to time to build up instructional knowledge can help you communicate with a wide variety of people.
