Last April, a management conference was held with the Chinese University of Hong Kong at the college of business administration. Two graduate students(Kim Yoon, Oh Eun-ji) majoring in management at our university participated in the conference and had time to present their research fields. We hope that this international conference will continue through various studies in the future, and we listened to the research fields and papers of Kim Yoon(a Ph.D. course in the management department) who participated this time.
<The Risk-Taking Tendency of CEO: The Impact of CEO’s Career Horizon on Internationalization>
(Advisor : Kim Sang-kyun)
1. Hello, please introduce yourself briefly(research field, etc.)
Hello, I'm Kim Yoon, a Ph.D. student studying management strategy at Sungkyunkwan University. After obtaining a master's degree at Sungkyunkwan University in 2017, I worked in the management planning team and overseas sales team of a company called Yeonwoo Co., Ltd. for two years. It was a good opportunity to gain various practical experiences while working at a company, but I have been pursuing a doctorate program since 2020 because I want to study deeply about the field I am interested in. Currently, my main research interest is in international management. I have been living abroad for a long time since I was young, and I have become interested in overseas activities of companies by experiencing various cultures. I am interested in analyzing and researching how companies can overcome internal and external factors from overseas expansion and lead to good results.
2. Please tell me what motivated you to participated in the international conference with the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Professor Kim Sang-kyun, my advisor, always gives me a lot of advice and directions so that I can have various experiences as a researcher. Writing a good paper is important, but he told me that introducing my researchers and receiving various feedback is also an important process. Although I was invited to participate in this conference at the recommendation of my professor, it was an opportunity to motivate myself to work harder in research activities, who had been a little daunted as a researcher for a while
while working on a thesis and presenting. By participating in various research activities in the future, I will try to become a researcher who continues to grow.
3. Please introduce your published paper, <The Risk-Taking Tendency of CEO: The Impact of CEO’s Career Horizon on Internationalization >
My thesis is a study that explores the effect of CEO retirement age on the degree of corporate internationalization. Specifically, it was suggested that CEOs who have relatively long retirement periods tend to choose risk-taking strategies, so they will tend to focus on or expand their overseas businesses. On the other hand, it was predicted that CEOs with a relatively short retirement period have low risk sensitivity, but tend to take risks and expand overseas more actively when they have high ownership. From 2013 to 2019, we examined the above hypotheses for U.S. companies in various industries and supported the claim the CEOs with relatively long retirement periods would participate more actively in internationalization. However, the moderating effect hypothesis that it would have a positive effect on ownership along with CEO retirement was not supported. Therefore, the results of this study provide meaningful academic and practical implications for understanding whether a company expands its overseas business from the perspective of the CEO.
4. Were there any difficulties while writing the paper?
This is the paper that I am most attached to and that caused me a lot of hardships. Despite all the modifications, I found it particularly difficult in the statistics of the research that is still ongoing. The data was re-collected to supplement and update the data, but the results were different from those originally derived, so it was completely corrected. There are still some things that need to be supplemented, so it is in progress, but I hope that the paper will be of academic and practical help in the future.
5. Please tell me about your future goals or areas you want to study.
I will conduct further research on international management, which is my interest. In particular, I will learn about strategies for companies to expand overseas and then re-enter after withdrawing from countries where they have entered due to various factors. Regarding the overseas re-entry of companies, it is expected that there will be difficulties in writing the thesis as not much research has been conducted yet, but I will not give up and try to draw results on the topic I want to explore. In addition to international management, I have the goal of conducting various research related to management strategy. Since I am interested in open innovation, which is an issue these days, I would like to find out the advantages of using the strategy and whether I can create value efficiently through cooperation between companies.
