Our university has announced that online lectures will conduct until the end of COVID-19. It was unfamiliar at first as it was being conducted as an online lecture for the health and safety of all students, but gradually, the semester is passing by in search of stability.
Today, we listened to Professor Lee Jong-eun, who communicates with students through online lectures. He had become the head of the department of business administration this year and he want to provide a venue for harmony for not only freshmen but also all classmates. Let's meet Professor Lee Jong-eun.
1. Hello Professor^^ Please introduce yourself.
Hi~ I'm Lee Jong-eun. I'm major in finance and also in charge of the head of the department of business administration.
2. Every lectures are going through on online. Is there any problem when you conduct recording lecture or live lecture?
I think it could be something that all professors felt.
Face-to-face lecture is conducted on scheduled time, and students communicate by looking each others eyes. But, recording lectures are made by professors themselves. So, professors are more concerned about how they will be shown in the video, whether their voices are okay, and whether their lectures are faithful than face-to-face lectures.
Perhaps, they are working harder to provide a better lecture to students who are struggling in the COVID-19.
In fact, most professors say that they put more effort and time into preparing for lectures than in face-to-face lectures by filming and editing lectures. Real-time video lectures, similar to face-to-face lectures, are a good way to compensate for the shortcomings of one-way pre-production video lectures. However, it seems that interaction with students is not effective in the online educational environment, especially in the number of students is high. The professors are very sorry about this. After the COVID19 era, we hope that there will be a new way of real-time video lecture technology that can supplement it.
So far, online education in our school has been going well due to the active response and support at the school level and the calling of professors and faculty members.
All members of our business school, led by the dean, have been making constant efforts to ensure and improve the quality of learning in difficult environments through pre-learning through pre-produced lecture videos, in-depth lectures using real-time lectures, and Q&As. However, smooth communication between professors and students remains a big challenge to solve.
3. Do you have any memorable online classes? Please tell me if you have any episodes.
Real-time online lectures are conducted by professors and students accessing video lecture tools such as Webex and Zoom. Students are often not good at manipulating software for unfamiliar video lectures.
For example, students get into lectures, they often forget that their microphone is on. During my graduate class, their spouse or children suddenly come into their room to talk to them. Although the situation ends quickly by contacting the student right away, embarrassing and embarrassing things often happen when others unintentionally hear private conversations.
4. What do you want to do after COVID19?
As I work as the head of the department at the business school, I would like to meet all the freshmen who entered the business administration department at Sungkyunkwan University this year. In the midst of the fiery college entrance exam war, freshmen in our business department have endured their dreams in the ivory tower of truth called college, imagining a romantic college life with their friends, but because of the unexpected ambush of COVID19, you must have felt the despair of the dream being shattered.
I would like to comfort them through meetings with freshmen in our business administration and to hear from them about the COVID19 experience and talk about the post COVID19 era they will face. Also, I would like to provide a place for harmony, communication, advancement, and leap forward for all students in the Business School.
5. Lastly, please say a word to Sungkyun, who is taking an online lecture at home.
With COVID19, we've heard the term "non-face-to-face" more closely. After the COVID19, I think that non-face-to-face will dig deeper into our daily lives than face-to-face and change our way of thinking and living. Digital civilization is at the heart of the non-face-to-face. Even now, in the wave of the Fourth Revolution, we are learning how to use a rather unfamiliar digital civilization.
COVID19, which no one had expected, is pushing us to learn about digital civilization and to find clues to how to live in a changed environment. You may think of this as a crisis, but I hope you see the current situation as a new opportunity to change the game.
Therefore, we hope that our students will not step back and boldly fight against COVID19 to create a better world with a sense of challenge and creativity. When you enter society after graduation, we expect that the non-face-to-face experience will become a more everyday business environment. It's time to anticipate this changing business environment and think deeply about how to prepare for it.
This is a transition period that adapts to digital civilization. There may be differences between generations living in the same era in adapting to digital civilization and getting the information they need. It is important to have a sense of competition to get ahead of others by using the digital divide among members, but I hope that our students will have greater generosity and consideration to help their classmates who are not well adapted to digital civilization and have a warm heart to go with them. In a digital civilization environment where there may be a lack of human warmth, the spirit of symbiosis and co-prosperity can flow the moist river of warmth among the members, which will make our lives more prosperous.
I hope you always do your best in the unexpected environment caused by COVID19 and show a win-win spirit. Most of all, I hope we can meet our students on campus as soon as possible with in good health. ^^
