- Introducing the achievements of Important Records and Heritage (Research Manager: Prof. Kim Dong-min)
- [Dong-A daily report article] Introducing the achievements of the National Register of Important Records and Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Administration (Research Manager: Professor Kim Dong-min) Yuji by Ryu Seong-ryong, Contents not in the Annals... Evaluation of historical materials that will fill the gap in the Japanese Invasion of Korea The Battle of Ugeumchi: The Complete Translation of Munjung Jeokdo The original text of the Cultural Heritage Administration will be released next year “Included in the contemporary era... Foundation of follow-up research” The portrait of Seo Ae Ryu Seong-ryong during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Provided by the Cultural Heritage Administration “Discuss the enemy's movements with Byeongbu-si and Song Eung-chang of the Ming Dynasty to come up with a plan to quickly advance the military. The police command the generals, arrange the government and righteous army separately, and if the enemies have not yet landed, destroy the enemy ship that has crossed with the naval forces, and if the enemies have already landed, cooperate with the elite soldiers to intercept.” On April 18, 1593, during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1593, the contents of the Yuji given by Seonjo to Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), a spirit tablet and conductor (the highest military post in the Joseon Dynasty). Two months ago, Jeolla Province observer Kwon Yul (1537-1599) defeated the Japanese enemy at Haengjusanseong Fortress, but no generals around him offered to help him. There are a series of reports that our troops are running away from the battlefield, and the Japanese enemy's power has been increasing, such as a wind lantern. Seonjo ordered Ryu Seong-ryong to preemptively attack the Japanese ship by mobilizing government and righteous army. ● "Contents of government measures at the time of the Imran“ On April 18, 1593, King Seonjo sent Ryu Seong-ryong an instruction to destroy the enemy ship that crossed with the naval forces if the enemy has not yet landed in Busan, and if they have already landed, cooperate with elite soldiers to intercept the Japanese ships. This was not confirmed in other historical materials, such as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty or Jingbirok written by Ryu Seong-ryong. Provided by the Cultural Heritage Administration Two books "Yoo Seong-ryong's Family Register-Yuji," was translated into Korean for the first time, which contains a total of 77 items, including 76 Yuji issued by King Seonjo to Ryu Seong-ryong between 1592 and 1607 and one suicide note (an order issued by the king to a military authority). Since 2018, the Cultural Heritage Administration and Sungkyunkwan University (Head Kim Dong-min) have translated 30 types of ancient documents (1,869,374 characters in total) designated as treasures through the "Important Record Heritage National Translation Project." Through this project, this historical material, which was held by the head family and difficult to access to the general public, was transferred to Korean. It is evaluated that the Yuji handed down to Ryu Seong-ryong will fill the gap in the study of the history of the Imjin War as it contains detailed countermeasures of the royal court, which are not in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. The maintenance of 18 April 1593, which contained countermeasures against the surging Japanese ships, contained a case of coordination that had not been identified in previous records. A day earlier, on April 17, 1593, the Annals said, "Who wouldn't be concerned about the enemy's dispatch of more troops this spring. It is only recorded that "Let the Border Defense Council take action." There are no details in "Jingbirok" and "Seoaejip" left by Ryu Sung-ryong. In addition, Yuji specifically conveys measures summarized in the Annals regarding military supply measures, requests for reinforcements to the Ming Dynasty, and discussions on repatriation of prisoners. Roh Seung-seok, chairman of Dongguk University's Yeohae Research Institute, who completely translated "Nanjung Ilgi," explained, "This historical material will not only help us analyze the royal court's tactics and success or failure at the time of Imran, but also create a three-dimensional figure history that reverses the flat evaluation of our ancestors.“ The emotions of ancestors, which were not recorded in the central government-run historical records, including the Annals of Seonjo, are also revealed in the maintenance. On March 25, 1593, King Seonjo sent Ryu Seong-ryong to Yuji, saying, "I can't stop crying because the Ming general has already decided to strengthen the Japanese enemy." At that time, the Annals of King Seonjo only said, "Shim Yu-kyung (?~1597) who was an envoy of the Ming Dynasty signed a peace with the Japanese commander and said he would defeat the military by April 8." However, Yuji vividly shows the anger of his ancestors after the strategy to draw cooperation from the Ming army failed. ● Describe of the Battle of Ugeumch Through this project, "Hamyang Park's Jeongranggongpa Munjungjeon-Naambeop," which contains the Battle of Ugeumchi, which the Donghak Peasant Army protested against the combined forces of Joseon and Japan in 1894, was also completed for the first time. The historical record, which was recorded by Park Joo-dae (1836-1912) who studied abroad in a total of four books from the late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period, depicts the wartime situation he heard from the Joseon government at the time. In the November 3, 1894, "When the enemy soldiers (Donghak Peasant Army) tried to cross the hill, they fired 40 or 50 times in unison, and the bodies of the enemy soldiers piled up and filled the mountain." Gong Jung-kwon, a senior researcher at Sungkyunkwan University, said, "It contains the social image of the upheaval of the time, including the eyes of a Confucian scholar who looked at the Donghak Peasant Revolt.“ The treasure "The Relics of Kim Jeong-hee's Family-Chokdokcho," which Chusa Kim Jung-hee (1786-1856) transcribed a letter from a Qing scholar, and the treasure "Artefacts related to Princess Myeongan," which Hyunjong's third daughter, Princess Myeongan (1667-1687) exchanged with the royal family, were also translated into Korean language. Jeong Je-gyu, an expert on tangible cultural properties at the Cultural Heritage Administration, said, "It is meaningful that the foundation for follow-up research on records that honestly contain the social aspects of the time has been laid.“ The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to release the original text and translation of 30 kinds of historical materials translated into Korea on the website of the National Heritage Portal next year. - [Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association News] - "In search of a college." by Kim Dong-min
-
[Sungkyunkwan University Alumni Association News] Interview in the February 2023 issue - Kim Dong-min, dean of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy (Studying abroad 87) Q. Composition and Introduction of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. There are East Asian thought and culture departments (Yugyo Kyungjeon, Korean thought, calligraphy, Oriental aesthetics, life etiquette, tea ceremony majors) and non-degree courses include Oriental culture advanced courses and Confucian leadership courses. In addition, we have a scholarship institution called Yang Hyun-jae to cultivate excellent talents in undergraduate and graduate schools. Research institutions include three research institutes under the Institute of Sungkyun Confucianism and Oriental Philosophy and Confucian Culture Research Institute under the Institute of East Asian Studies. Currently, the university has eight full-time faculty members, 400 students (220 undergraduate students, 180 graduate students), and 120 researchers at the institute. Q. History of the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. It is in line with the history of Sungkyunkwan University's opening in 1946 when it established the Gyeongsang and Cheoljeong departments based on studying abroad. The Department of Oriental Philosophy was first established in 1948, and it was promoted to a study abroad university in 1967, and its history as a college began by establishing a study abroad department and a philosophy department under it. In 1981, it was divided into three departments: study abroad, Korean philosophy, and Oriental philosophy. After that, it was reorganized into study abroad and oriental philosophy, and now it is integrated into study abroad and oriental studies. The graduate course was established in 1957 as a Ph.D. in Oriental Philosophy, Korean Philosophy, and Oriental Philosophy. It is now integrated into the Department of Oriental Philosophy and has three majors under it. Q. The Strengths and Characteristics of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. The College of Study is in line with the history of this school, which boasts the 625th anniversary of its foundation. Sungkyunkwan University is an orthodox Korean national university that inherits the Confucian traditions of Goguryeo and Sungkyunkwan in Joseon, and it is a university that represents the legitimacy and spirit of Sungkyunkwan University. In the undergraduate course, systematic education on traditional studies is conducted. Graduate school trains students to grow into a follow-up generation by studying abroad, oriental philosophy, and Korean philosophy in detail. Students from these universities are recognized as the best talents in various fields such as domestic and foreign universities, research institutes, and companies through their outstanding personality and academic ability. Q. A particular area of research A. Since the university has its own education and research system, it is conducting various types of education and research programs by winning many research funding projects both internally and externally. In the field of education, a total of 21 years (1999-2020) were carried out from the 1st to 3rd stages of the BK21 project, and it was the only one selected in the country in the philosophy/religion field in the ongoing 4th phase (2020.9-2027.8). In the field of research, about 30 researchers from the Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute of Studies (5 years, 5 billion won) are promoting the spread and globalization of Korean philosophy through the development and distribution of online content related to Korean philosophy and culture. Under the Cultural Heritage Administration's "Important Archival Heritage International Project" (3 years, 1.65 million), more than 60 researchers contribute to popularizing traditional Korean culture and ideas by translating important national heritage into a database. In addition, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is carrying out various national projects such as "Korea Yugyung Jeongbonhwa DB and Utilization System Construction Project (2010-2022,3.37 billion won), "Humanities and Social Research Institute Support Project" (1.4 billion won), and "Korea Academic Translation Project" (60 million won). Q. The Development Goals of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy A. In Analect, there is a saying, "If you study the old and know the new, you can become a teacher." The College of Study is to inherit and develop the Confucian tradition based on the spirit of Ongo. This goal is showing tangible results through projects such as ·
and along with the systematic education and research system of the university. Next, based on the spirit of intellectualism, we will focus our efforts on the social spread of studying abroad by promoting the modernization and globalization of studying abroad. This goal is being realized through projects such as · . Q. What do you want to say to 250,000 alumni? A. As of 2023, Sungkyunkwan University has launched a bold challenge for humanity and the future society, and its best goal is to foster global leaders who can lead the challenge. The talent award pursued by Sungkyunkwan University is a leader who can harmonize traditional and future values, like the slogan "unique origin, unique future." So, what is the tradition of Sungkyunkwan University, the "vocal" tradition that no other university has? There's a saying in Analects that says, "Painting is done after you have a white background." It means that you can only draw a great work on it if you have clean and white drawing paper. Now, our university is drawing more colorful pictures than anyone else through remarkable growth. However, in the fierce competition for universities, it is never easy for our university's paintings to be evaluated as excellent works. Or rather, it could be very easy. Our university has a white background that no other university has, or 'unique' 'sexuality', and that is the value of the tradition of studying abroad. Painting on the value of this tradition can be a masterpiece unique to Sungkyunkwan University that can be recognized and respected by anyone. The College of Study will do its best to make Sungkyunkwan University's 625-year study abroad tradition a clean and reliable foundation for Sungkyunkwan University, which dreams of a great future. We hope that 250,000 Sungkyunkwan University alumni will believe and support that the university is an important asset of our university that keeps the "vocal" tradition. -

- The 1st Korean Philosophy and Culture Digital Convergence Talent Contest Award Ceremony
- On February 7, the University of Foreign Studies held an award ceremony for the "1st Korean Philosophy and Culture Digital Convergence Talent Contest". The contest is designed to inspire undergraduates with interest in Korean philosophy and digital humanities and to enhance their capabilities in digital methodology. Despite the theme of Korean philosophy and the difficult demand of using digital methodology, the students managed it in their own ways. The Grand Prize-winning "Making My Own 3D Drawing" team (Park Jae-yi, Choi Kwon-hee, and Han Young-heon) produced learning contents that can implement their own drawings with simple commands using Python (computer language). This content induces users to naturally access the implications of Korean philosophy through drawing. (If you go to https://cafe.naver.com/skkudigitalcontents, you can meet the illustrations implemented by students.) The team (Yoon Young-chae, Lee Ga-eun, and Seo Yuri), which won the grand prize, developed VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) based on Donuimun Japanese colonial eraines, which were damaged during the Japanese colonial period. This content combines location-based services (LBS) with events and places that represent resistance to Japanese colonial era "unjustice" to interpret the restoration of Donuimun as a journey to find "righteousness." (You can see content created by students by adding KakaoTalk channels by accessing https://pf.kakao.com/_TiEfxj.) Choi Jung-in received the Special Achievement Award for "Our People from the Department of Oriental Studies." Based on the survey, the above content identifies the status of double majors and club activities of students and graduates of the Department of Oriental Studies, and then visualizes them to track significant trends. The organizers thanked all participants for interpreting various topics that were not easy in their own ways, and awarded prizes to the winners to encourage follow-up research.

- 2022 Overseas Korean Philosophy and Culture Exchange Program Completed at the University of Foreign Studies
- 2022 Overseas Korean Philosophy and Culture Exchange Program Completed at the University of Foreign Studies The 2022 Overseas Philosophy and Culture Exchange Program, prepared by the University of Foreign Studies (President Kim Dong-min) for the winter vacation, was held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from December 18 to December 22. South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, called Asia's four dragons, have all achieved rapid growth since the late 20th century, and have grown to world-class levels in academic and research fields. Among them, Singapore has the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), boasting the best education and research levels in Asia. Therefore, this program was planned to introduce Korean philosophy and culture abroad, experience Singapore's world-class research level, and lay the foundation for the growth and international advancement of our students. Hosted by Sungkyunkwan University's College of Study, Professor Park So-jung and Professor Kim Dong-min participated as lead teachers, and 20 students selected through document and interview screening among Ph.D.-level assistants, students majoring in Oriental studies, and multiple graduates participated for a total of 3 nights and 5 days. On the first day, he visited the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on the second day, and on the last day, he completed the overseas Korean philosophy and culture program by visiting various attractions to learn Singapore's culture and history and eating local food. At the National University of Singapore (NUS), Professor Park Mi-hee of the Department of Korean Language gave a lecture under the theme of "Teaching and Learning Korean in a Multilingual Society," and Sungkyunkwan University's students introduced Sungkyunkwan University and College of Study to students at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In addition, I had time to communicate in groups with students enrolled in the Korean language department, and visited the NUS Central Library. Nanyang Technological University (NTU) examined the structure of the eco-friendly school and the appearance of the classroom through a campus tour. Professor Andrew Forcehimes, head of the philosophy department at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), explained the overall operation of the department, and Professor Winnie Sung gave lectures on NTU's philosophy undergraduate and graduate programs. As in NUS, by having time to communicate with NTU philosophy students in groups, it was not a one-off event, but a stepping stone for true cultural exchange through continuous communication and meetings. This program was conducted in a situation where the COVID-19 crisis was somewhat alleviated, but it thoroughly followed quarantine rules and carried out all schedules. A total of 23 participants, including leading teachers, assistants, and students, prepared various things to make the program more substantial through group meetings and general meetings in advance, as a good opportunity to introduce Korean philosophy and culture abroad. We prepared an English presentation to introduce Sungkyunkwan University and College of Study to the members of the university, had time to build up prior knowledge to understand Singapore and University of Exchange for a short period of time, and held a meeting after the event to share our thoughts on overseas philosophy and culture exchange. By researching and presenting Singapore, NUS, and NTU in advance, we were able to enhance the capabilities of our students at the University of Foreign Studies, and by experiencing Singapore's global research level, it was a foundation for them to grow into international researchers in the future. Participants in the program said, "I had time to talk to students in person, so I was able to understand the actual culture of Singapore." , "Through conversations with local students, I thought that if I could clearly identify and develop the points (media content, tourism) that foreigners are attracted to our culture, I could promote Korea more widely." "It was good to be able to harmonize and interact with various classmates and understand the facilities and system of Singapore University." He left his impressions. Professor Park So-jung, who is planning to conduct overseas exchanges and other foreign exchange universities, said, "I think it was a good experience of overseas exchange opportunities for students who didn't have opportunities.I hope this program will be given regularly and more students." The video program held between 3 nights and 5th, will be mounted on the website of Sungkyunkwan University of Sungkyunkwan University.
