- Employment performance of the Department of (Global) Business Administration is skyrocketing even during difficult time
-
Doors into the job market has narrowed due to a tight job market such as the abolition of open recruitment and the worsening employment environment caused by COVID-19, but the employment performance of graduates of our university’s department of (global) business administration is on the rise. As a result of conducting a “post-graduation current status” on summer graduates in 2021, it was confirmed that the employment rate of graduates was high and they entered various industries. Of the 91 employed, 22 were employed by the four major accounting firms (13 Samgjeong KPMG, 8 Samil PwC, and 1 Deloittee Anjin. In addition, 24 students were employed by the large companies (SK, Hyundai, Samsung, LG, etc.) and it has been confirmed that they work in core departments such as marketing, strategic planning, human resources, and finance. 5 graduates entered the public enterprises/public services, which is highly preferred, and 14 graduates were hired in major domestic financial sectors such as Mirae Asset, Korea Investment & Securities, and NH Investment & Securities (working at many headquarters, including PF, IPO jobs). Moreover, 5 were hired in IT/Foreign companies and the result showed the possibility of entering various fields such as Kakao Pay, Kakao Games, and 3M KOREA. Jong-Eun Lee, the Vice Dean of College of SKK Business School and the Department Chair of Business Administration, said “Even in this tight job market due to COVID-19 pandemic, our graduates have made good efforts with a sense of purpose. The faculty and staff members of our college will continue to work together to provide useful information related to job preparation through

Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, three new teachers were appointed in the second semester of the 2021 school year, their majors were marketing(1 person), management information(1 person), and FinTech(1 person), and they were invited to be teachers with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor Park Jong-hyun of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans' Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you! Please introduce yourself. Hello. Nice to meet you. I'm Park Jong-hyun, and I'm in the field of management information(production and operation). I am very happy and excited to be a member of Sungkyunkwan University, which boasts a long history and tradition and moves forward to world-class prestigious culture. I majored in industrial engineering from Korea University, received a master's degree form University of Michigan, and a doctorate in business science and operation management from Purdue University's business school. Before coming here, I served as an assistant professor at Southern New Hampshire University for a year and a half and Sejong University for three and a half years. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose your major? The field of production and operation deals with various decision-making issues that arise in the supply chain of a company or organization. Supply chain network refers to a network that includes a variety of processes from sources to consumption to provide products or services to customers. Having an efficient supply chain to respond to rapidly changing business environment is an essential ability for all successful companies. In particular, with the emergence of advanced technologies due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, various quantitative models and scientific approaches are becoming more urgently needed to manage supply chains in a corporate environment where vast amounts of data are pouring out. In fact, before studying abroad, I worked in the department of managing the supply chain of Nongsim, a food company well known for ramen. As I participated in the enterprise-wide project, I was able to experience the improved supply chain drastically reducing corporate costs and increasing competitiveness, which seems to have motivated to study more advanced production and operation techniques. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans. I know that Sungkyunkwan University Business School has not only excellent professors in various fields, but also many students who are full of motivation to learn business administration. I look forward to getting along with these members. I hope that the experience I gained from working for companies such as Nongshim and Ford and running startups, studying various social issues at home and abroad, and sharing my broadened knowledge through activities and communication within the school will grow together. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. I'm teaching management statistics this semester, and I'm going to teach this subject as well as production and operation management in the future. Management statistics deal with statistical techniques widely used in business administration. It can be said that the ability to understand and accurately analyze related data is essential for a company to make multiple decisions. Management statistics aims to learn the concepts that are the basis of various statistical analyses that will be covered in other detailed major subjects of business administration. The production and operation management class deals with quantitative analysis and operation management technologies to manage the supply chain, and we would like to teach topics such as inventory management, logistics management, and quality management focusing on various cases. Q5. What are your future research plans? I am mainly studying the problem of distributing resources in the supply chain. In particular, in an unbalanced situation where supply and demand are biased to one side, various factors must be considered to effectively distribute resources, and I am developing a mathematical model to derive the best solution in this case. Recently, COVID-19 has greatly reduced medical resources such as masks, treatments, vaccines, etc. around the world, and considering various problems related to distribution that may occur at this time, it will come more easily. Also, I am very interested in interdisciplinary research using mathematical modeling. For example, research on public opinion and market analysis that discriminates fake comments or fake news using machine learning algorithms is also actively underway. Recently, based on these interdisciplinary studies, I founded a company called Dali Labs, and the startup received government project support one after another last year and this year, so I am working hard in terms of industry. Q6. Please tell us about the ideal educator you think of. Basically, I think it's important to convey the necessary major knowledge to students in my class. Next, there are various student groups in any class, and as a result, I think it's rewarding as an educator to give good students a chance to grow further and to create an atmosphere where students who lack motivation don't give up until the end. Above all, I'd like to constantly think and work hard so that students can be interested in and like my favorite field. Fortunately, I like and value building one-on-one relationships with students individually, so I am still trying to keep in touch with graduates or students who took classes from time to time and act as mentors. I want to be an educator of life and major that helps students grow inside and outside the classroom. Q7. If there is anything you would like to say to students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School please tell them! I hope that all students at Sungkyunkwan University Business School will think of their college life as a process of finding what they really want without questioning their abilities. It would be nice only to take various major classes provided by the school, but also to actively seek experiences through various opportunities such as clubs, interns, and exchange students. After 20 years of my youth, when I don't know exactly what I like or what I should do, I think that one of the best ways is to meet and find out. The one who knocks on the door will have a chance. Everyone is in a difficult situation due to COVID-19, but I sincerely support you to become a student at Sungkyunkwan University Business School who turns crisis into an opportunity. -

- [Interview with Professor Choi Young-soo] Jang Jeong-yoon, Regarding the appointment of an assistant professor
- Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon, a graduate of business administration at our university, was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Central Connecticut State University in August 2021. Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon obtained doctorate degree in February 2020 as [Pay Ratio an Earnings Management](academic adviser : Choi Young-soo) and was currently appointed an assistant professor in accounting at Central Connecticut State University in the United States. We met Professor Choi Young-soo, who prepared together as an academic adviser, and listened to the story of Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon's appointment as an assistant professor. [Photo] Professor Choi Young-soo(left), Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon(right) 1. One of the doctoral students led by the professor, Jang Jeong-yoon, was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Central Connecticut State University in the United States. As an advisor, please tell us how you feel. I'm very happy. Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon is my third disciple and she is the first one to be appointed as a professor. Of course, it is good for students to enter accounting firms or accounting-related institutions, but most of them start Ph.D. programs with the aim of appointing professors, so it is very rewarding as an advisor in that their goals have been achieved. 2. I am curious about the process of Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon's appointment as an assistant professor. It is expected that you have been very helpful as an advisor, please explain. Since Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon came to our school as a doctoral program, she has been targeting overseas universities. However, after she got her doctorate in February 2020, she thought a lot about whether she could go abroad for various personal reasons. As the eldest in the family, she had a sense of responsibility for her parents. And with the outbreak of COVID-19, the situation got more complicated. Because many American Universities have withdrawn or postponed their plans to appoint professors. I didn't ask in detail, but I think she had enough conversation with her family. After that, she started looking into it in earnest. Actually, I didn't do much as an advisor. I don't think there's anything other than trying to write recommendations well and praying. I wasn't very worried because she had a lot of experience in teaching at various foreign companies and universities instructors, but I'm glad she was appointed as a professor as soon as she got her degree. 3. As an advisor and Ph.D. student, I think the professor and Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon studied a lot together. The amount of research was not a concern in the first place, as we were targeting overseas universities from the start. I've said many times that the quality of research is much more important, so focus on making a good thesis. So far, no joint research has been published with me. One paper has been submitted to the SSCI journal, and the work to make the doctoral thesis a journal paper will begin in earnest after Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon established herself to some extent in the United States. 4. What kind of student was Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon She is cheerful, polite, humble, and happy when I meet her. It was also nice to contact me first and have lunch together, and to take the lead in contacting other guidance students on Teacher's Day to form a meeting. Because we trust each other, we often talked about our insides. I often hear that I am blessed, and I think that's right when I look at Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon and other my guidance students. 5. Like Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon, there are many students who want to go to graduate school and take the path of professors abroad or in Korea, so please say something that will help these students. In the case of accounting, most of the students who graduated before have been hired by domestic universities, but it has become difficult to hire professors over the past three to four years. I don't know how the situation will change in the future, but I recommend that you think about targeting overseas universities from the start of your Ph.D. program like Dr. Jang Jeong-yoon. Even for those whose ultimate goal is to become a professor at a domestic university, it can be much more advantageous if they gain experience from an overseas university. The appointment of domestic universities should pay attention not only to the quality of research but also to the quantity, but in the case of overseas universities, only to pay attention to the quality of research. I think it's possible if you focus on one detailed research field during your Ph.D. program and systematically improve your English under a mid-to long-term plan. I really want you to know that accounting is still in great demand from universities around the world for Ph.D. students.

- [Student Success Story] 'Winning the Encouragement Award at the Entrepreneurship Contest' Han Senug-ah
- On July 22(Thu), the Jongno Cluster Culture, Arts, and Content Startup Competition was held online. The contest was designed to discover various creative convergence ideas that can preserve and develop the characteristics of local culture in Jongno-gu. In this competition, Han Seung-ah(Business 16, CEO of Billage)of our university received the Encouragement Award. We heard various stories she experienced while preparing for the competiton. 1. Hello, please introduce yourself. Hello! My name is Han Seung-ah, form the 16th class of Business Administration, who is currently the project manager of 'Billage, a Reading Village'. 2. I heard that you won the Encouragement Award at the Jongno Cluster Stratup Contest! Congratulations. What is the Jongno Cluster Startup Contest? Please tell us about your feelings about winning the award and what motivated you to participate in the competition. Thank you! The Jongno Cluster Startup Competition is a startup competition hosted by Jongno-gu, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea National Open University, and Baehwa Women's University. It is a cultural and artistic content start-up competition that can enhance and develop the cultural characteristic of Jongno. Since Billage is in the early stages of the business to try various things and develop its business, it needed mentoring and subsides, and it needed a start-up space for meetings and work team members, so I applied. I thought it was a good opportunity to find a lot of shortcomings and get a lot of help while receiving two mentoring sessions before the finals, and I was so happy that I even won the award. Thank you very much for mentoring, subsides, and space for start-ups. 3. What subject did the Billage team win the prize for? Billage, a village that read books, won the business model (BM) called "Independent Publication Regular Subscription Service". Billage is a project that strives to revive independent bookstores, and is trying to create attractive products and services that can connect books and bookstore readers. Our regular subscription service is a service that partners with other independent bookstores every month to deliver independent publications and various components recommended by the independent bookkeeper (bookkeeper and author's curation card, book grind, etc.)to your home every month! (In addition, we regularly publish content related to independent bookstores, and in February, we developed an independent bookstore recommendation test based on the personality type test. We are doing all kinds of activities for the revival of independent bookstores. If you are curious, please visit the link https://linktre.ee/Billage_book or @billage_book Instagram and take a look!!) 4. Are there any episodes while preparing for this start-up competition or during activities? Reminds me of the time Billage wrapped up the 'independent publication subscription service'^^ Our members do the packaging themselves, and there are friends who are dexterous and there are those who don't. Everyone had a hard time cutting artificial flowers for packaging, and there were many cases where packaging was difficult. There was a friend who worked part-time at Yankee Candle. It was amazing because he was so good ㅎㅎ It's easy to cut the artificial flower, and the bookmark holder is also snappy! When working on a start-up project, there are a lot of small things that I have to do myself, so I think these small things become memorable. Experiences that I never thought I would be able to use become a great asset! 5. What were the difficulties while preparing for the promotion? How did you overcome this? We had previously planned an offline-oriented business model that could induce visits to independent bookstores. However, due to COVID-19, it was not easy to do something offline, and it was not well received by independent bookstore owners, so I became a pivot. Since the bookstore itself is an offline space, there are various activities that can be done offline, but it was too bad that I couldn't use them. However, in line with that environment, we are trying to reinforce online-oriented regular subscription services and strengthen our competitiveness as a platform. To hear the needs of independent bookstore owners, I'm doing a lot of interviews with partnership owners. 6. What are your future careers and goals? First of all, as can be expected from the fact that I am engaged in Billage activities, I am interested in the field of culture and arts, so I want to work in that field. It's not a specific goal that falls into one word, but I want to become a person who can work independently in the field by using what I have learned, and in particular, I want to become a person who can influence society for good. 7. Lastly, please sat a word to business school students who are interested in starting a business. There's a saying that goes, "Ready, launch, aim". Originally, I didn't fire without unconditional aim, but when I was running a startup while working for Billage, I realized that it is more important to challenge and try a lot than to hesitate. I hope you don't hesitate and try it without regrets!

[New Professor Special]'Rather than worrying in advance, have fun experiencing various fields.'

This time, we met Professor Chae in-young of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans’ Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself professor. Hello. My name is In-Young Chae, who entered Sungkyunkwan University as a marketing major. I graduated from Yousei University with an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master's degree in applied statistics. After that, I got my PhD at INSEAD in France and Singapore, and after working at Emory University in the US for 5 years, I joined Sungkyunkwan University this time. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose your major? My major is digital marketing, and my research activities are digital advertising, word of mouth/influencer marketing, and media marketing. The methodology analyzes the direction in which consumers make decisions online and optimize them through statistical, quantitative, and big data analysis. In fact, I have been interested in marketing since I was an undergraduate, but while I was in the campus marketing club, I thought that I had a lot of talent in finance and accounting rather than marketing. I didn't plan to study for a long time, so when I was an undergraduate, I was scheduled to work in the financial sector and get a job in the banking sector, but at the end, I changed my direction to the strategic planning headquarters of a large corporation and joined the company. While working at the company, I worked and learned in a variety of fields, and there is a lot of data in the world, but I don't know how to use it. So when I looked into it, these fields were developed a lot in marketing modeling, and I started studying again to learn them. Interestingly, when I went to the doctoral program, I was working on a project in digital marketing with a professor who was there, so I felt that this field is a new field, so there are many new things to learn and there is a lot of potential for the future. Most of all, it's dynamic field, so I think it is fun to continue working here. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans. Many things were good while teaching at an American university, but I always had a dream about the Korean school I learned and grew up in. Among them, I'm always thankful to be able to work at such a good school. I want to meet many students, and I hope that I can become such a mentor that can be helpful now and in the future. I an not good enough, but I plan to do my best with an open mind so that the knowledge, wisdom, and insight I have learned so far can help you in the future that will lead our country in the future. Q4. Please give a brief introduction about the class you are taking. I'm going to teach a new class called Digital Marketing and Analytics. This class is a class that I have been teaching in Emory, and it is a class that combines various fields of global digital marketing with existing marketing theories to practice using new digital platforms. In detail, you can deal with SEO, digital advertising, and social media marketing, and learn how to understand and analyze digital data for mare systematic and practical decisions. It is a subject that students enjoy very much in terms of using Google Anlaytics, Social media listening tools, and advertising simulation. This time, it was selected as an innovative class, so my plan is to focus on classes that students learn and enjoy more than credits. This class is also very related to classes taught by Emory to managers of large companies in Atlanta, such as Delta, Hole Depot, and Coca Cola, so it will be an opportunity for students to learn what kind of things are used in American global companies. Q5. What are your future research plans? My plan is to continue to research like now^^ Currently, projects are in the direction of digital marketing strategies, digital advertising, and social media advertising of media company such as CNN, and most them are collaborating with large companies in the United States and faculty members in the United States. In the future, I hope that there will be many opportunities to apply the knowledge I learned in Korea. Above all, if there are students interested in this way, I hope there will be many opportunities to work together. Q6. Please tell us about the ideal educator you think of. This part is something I keep thinking about. I think the most rewarding thing for me at Emory was when I heard that the students got a job or got a job with what they learned in my class and it was really helpful, or when I saw the growth of students studied together. However, if an educator who is helpful in the future is the primary goal, I think it is the ultimate goal of becoming a mentor who empathizes with reality and moves forward together. And I often think that it would be nice if I could build up my strength and become a shield for students. For many students, university is the last school before they go into society, but wouldn't it be more powerful if they received a lot of protection and love before starting a difficult social life? Q7. If there is anything you would like to say to students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them! Even if you feel hopeless in the future, light will be shining in front of you at some point. Rather than worrying in advance, I hope that you will be able to have a fun time to experience various fields, and even if it takes time, I hope you are getting closer to the path you can be happy. -

- [Contemporary Opinion] Shareholder capitalism and Stakeholder capitalism_Dean Ahn Heejun.
- The fall semester of college start this week. In the first week of financial management class, I always mention maximizing corporate value as a goal of corporate management that managers should pursue. Maximizing corporate value means maximizing corporate asset value evaluated in the market, which is in line with maximizing shareholder value. Maximization of shareholder value is based on shareholder capitalism, and discussions on stakeholder capitalism are active as an alternative along with recent criticism of shareholder capitalism. Criticism of shareholder capitalism varies, ranging from claims that maximizing management's decision-making standards can harm a company's long-term value by focusing only on short-term performance, to claims that it can lead to contrary to the interests of employees, partners, and society. On the other hand, in stakeholder capitalism, managers aim to coexist with the internal and external environment of the company while pursing the common interests of various stakeholders. Are shareholder capitalism and stakeholder capitalism completely different concepts? I tell students that these two are not conflicting concepts in the developed capital market. Some says that stock prices are short-term indicators that are prone to immediate corporate, but stock prices are by no means a short-term concept. For example, it is often observed that the stock price of a company with high growth potential but not making immediate profits is high. In other words, stock prices are the product of long-term valuation, taking into account corporate performance in the distant future. In addition, market valuation reflects not only sales and costs, but also various information such as risk and corporate reputation. When a company acts against its stakeholders, it affects its reputation and negatively affects its stock price. If the stock market plays a proper role, maximizing share holder value does not conflict with the needs of stakeholders, and shareholder capitalism and stakeholder capitalism converge with each other. In particular, as a recent that makes this possible, information technology development, citizenship maturity, and ESG(environmental, social, and governance) investment are emerging. If a company acts against stakeholders such as employees or local communities, it will be immediately reflected in stock prices and undermine shareholder value. A few years ago, a high-ranking executive of an airline in Korea overuse power against employees or overuse power against an agency of a local food and beverage company's power abuse is typical. Immediately after the incident, the news spread rapidly through media and social networking services(SNS) and caused a significant drop in stock prices. Next it the rise of investment in ESG. According to the US SIF, ESG investment in the U.S., which was $3 trillion in 2010, quadrupled to $12 trillion in 2020 in 10 years. In addition, about a third of investment assets currently managed by experts in the U.S. are reported to be related to ESG investment. The characteristic of ESG investment in recent years is that companies are not only pursing social values, but also require financial performance. The expansion of ESG investment, which pursues both social and economic performance at the same time, makes shareholder value and stakeholder value closer. It is now difficult to achieve maximum shareholder value without consideration for stakeholders. As in the case of Emmanuel Faber, who recently stepped down as CEO of Danonm it is difficult to continue the act of pursing only social values at a time when economic values are neglected. - [SKKUZine] Professor Yong-Jun Kim, Department of Business Administration "Be patient and plan your own journey".
-
知彼知己, 百戰不殆. It means, if you know your enemy and know your self, you won't be in danger even if you fight a hundred times. This word in the pore of the Art of War would not be wrong to be substituted into the Republic of Korea in 2021, which is located between the powers. China is one of the countries that exert the greatest presence in recent relationships with Korea, whether positive or negative. Regardless of form and direction, we have no choice but to establish a relationship with China, and we need to respond wisely to this relationship. In this person focus, we met Professor Kim Yong-joon of the Department of Business Administration, who is the president of the Chinese Graduate School of our university. Professor Yong-joon Kim appeared on
on July 15 and gave a lecture on the subject of 'Unveiling China's first-class companies'. Q. Please introduce your self briefly I'm Kim Yong-joon a professor of business administration at Sungkyunkwan University and the president of the Chinese Graduate School of Sungkyunkwan University. After receiving a doctorate in marketing and teaching at Sungkyunkwan University in 1991, I mainly studied and gave lectures on marketing strategies and started researching China at Cheonghwa University in 1996, and I have been doing research in China for 25 years, doing research and teaching in fields such as Chinese marketing and Chinese companies. In particular, as the US-China economic war and technology war began recently, I am studying and lecturing how changes have occurred in the supply chain in the global AI and big data industries around the world. Nice to meet you Q. On July 15th, you appeared on 'Class of Difference' and gave a lecture on the subject of 'Unveiling the veil of a leading Chinese company'. Actually, I know that you also conducts major classes related to China. What are the characteristics of China in business management compared to other countries? Business administration basically studies companies, non-profit organizations, and state agencies planning and implementing a series of strategies to achieve their goals and visions within a given environment, and develop feedback again to effectively manage them. Wherever go in the world, the government, business, schools, and hospitals have taken this approach, and since the 1980s, these management techniques have been shared mainly through MBA around the world. What makes China different from other countries is that China is a country that aims for China's unique market economy socialism. As a result, business activities are conducted under the involvement and guidance of the Chinese Communist Party and the government. Unlike the government, which companies deal with in a general free market economy, the Chinese government can make the final decision on the management and management of companies or provide guidance and regulation according to the direction of the country's development Q. I wonder what the different is between teaching students and appearing on the broadcast. It's been 31 years since I became a professor, and the lecture for students is basically for students to apply and take the professor's class, so the lecture is conducted with the professor's words accepted. Lectures through broadcasting or mass media are not decided by students to take classes in advance, so you can watch the broadcast whenever you want or turn it off it's not fun.(laughs) Unlike classes in which the professor's words are fully accepted, there is a difference in which the public can select the broadcast content. Therefore, the difference is that the broadcast should be well planned from the beginning, and especially when interacting with the cast, it is necessary to prepare a lot in advance for the individual attributes of the cast and what people can ask questions. Q. You are serving as the president of the Chinese Graduate School of our school, and I wonder what kind of place the Chinese Graduate School is and what kind of job you are doing as thed Chinese Graduate School Sungkyunkwan University's Graduate School of China was established in 2006. The main reason for establishing the Graduate School of China is to nurture human resources in need of professional manpower in Korea-China business, as well as Korea-China relations, especially business relations, which account for more than 25% of Korea's exports. In the Graduate School of China, Chinese professors teach classes in Chinese and English. It is a place where future talents are nurtured by specializing in fields such as business, consumers and finance that take place in China. The weekday course of the program is a general master's course, so Korean and Chinese students take classes, and the weekend courses are mostly taken by business people, which are taught in Korean and Chinese. Multilingual classes are offered and students spend a semester or a year studying at universities in China such as Tsinhua University, Peking University, Renmin University, Fudan University, and Beijing Shincheon University. My goal is to experience and acquire knowledge directly in China through classes, so my biggest role is to achieve that goal as a director, and I have been doing this for six years now. Q. What kind of student was Yong-jun Kim in college? I wonder what your dreams were when you were in school and what kind of college life you spent. I entered college in 1978. At that time, Korea was a very dark period socially. When I went to college, there were almost no classes and demonstrated on campus. By the 4th grade, Korean society had grown very economically and so-called chaebols and companies were emerging, but socially, it was difficult because democratization was not progressing under the Yushin. I thought it would be great to become a university professor during this time, to study business management according to corporate growth, and to be able to teach and research this to students. That's how I started dreaming of becoming a professor. Thankfully, after studying abroad, I became a professor in Canada and came back to Sungkyunkwan University and became a person who realized my dream. Many people feel grateful when they achieve dreams in their 20s, and I can be seen as such a person. Q. I think the world that symbolizes business administration is 'innovation'. What do you think innovation is? Innovation is fundamentally about changing. Technological change accounts for a large part of the changes, and 'how individuals and organizations adapt to technological changes,' is the essence of innovation. Now, the essence of innovation is 'Digital Transformation'. As we enter digital society, individuals, organizations, businesses, and government are digitizing around the world, and almost all the technologies for 'Digital Transformation' are available. There is a question of how an individual or organization acquires and utilizes it. The advancement of technology is happening so quickly that it is being brought into our lives, but not in the case of humans. Not only people but also large corporations and organizations are more difficult to change. So, when we say innovation in business administration now, we can say digital innovation, and here, each individual or organizations should first acquire digital skills. The biggest issue in future business administration will be that we apply and utilize many changes in organizational culture and human relations created accordingly. Q. What are your future research plans? I've been doing research on Chinese companies. In particular, I mainly studied Chinese companies in field such as big data, AI, drones, electric vehicles, and autonomous vehicles related to the fourth industry. Recently, the U.S.-China war, especially the technology war, has caused many changes in the global supply chain. As you know well, the global supply chain has been formed in this field as a model in which the U.S. provides original technologies and China experiments and commercialize applied technologies. That's why the United States is proposing to solve not only the original technology but also the production, manufacturing, and utilization of in the United States. In addition to China's response to this, an important issue is what kind of response policies governments and companies in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, which have played an important role in manufacturing and production, should implement in the future. In particular, Korea is between the United States and China, so it is necessary to make very wise decisions in the policies of the United States and China. I have recently been studying changes in the supply chain, especially in the AI industry, and am planning to study for the next three to four years. Q. I wonder what is the most important thing in studying business administration. Business administration and management are technologies used to manage and operate various types of organizations, and various methods are being introduced here. The first step in the nature of management is the process of reading and adapting to the environment. Therefore, when studying business administration, techniques such as accounting, finance, marketing, and organizational management are important, but you need to pay more attention to the organization's environment, especially technological and natural environment changes, demographic changes. I think students who study business administration should study science and technology and environment. Many students study business administration for employment, but in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, it is common for good schools to study science technology, engineering, and humanities, and then learn business administration through MBA if necessary. This is because the essence of business administration is to read the environment well and respond to its changes. well and respond to its changes. Second, management involves the process of communicating with people in an organization. In the process of communicating with others and providing services, self-reflection is needed. In particular, I think that how to communicate with people using information and technology will emerge as a big topic in business administration, as the digital field will replace many parts of AI. Therefore, I hope that our Sungkyunkwan University students can focus on building new digital knowledge such as AI, big data, and machine learning, and read global trends while studying or traveling in foreign languages. Q. Lastly, please give a word of support and advice to business administration students. As a professor, I am very sorry that business administration students have been enrolled for over a year, but they are not able to go to OT or MT and to communicate with professors offline naturally. I hope that the COVID-19 situation will improve soon, and through a lot of effort, you will find the direction of your life and spend a beautiful time with the academic traditions of Sungkyunkwan University and excellent professors of Sungkyunkwan University Business School. In particular, I think the essence of university education is to exchange between seniors and juniors through clubs and conferences, build networks in them, and self-observation and reflection in their own way. Sungkyunkwan University provides many services and experiences in this area. On the one hand, I hope you will strengthen your capabilities in the field of digital technology. Regardless of your major, I hope you can study coding, machine learning, big data, and AI fields so that you can show your abilities when offline activities return. It must be hard for all of you, bu I hope you have time to build your own capabilities. ‘Be patient and trust your journey.’ I wish you have a little more patience and have time to plan and proceed with your own journey. - "Appreciate everything you've done for me" Professor Choi Jong-Beom, Retirement interview
- 1. I'm curious about how you feel about your teaching career at the Business school I started my college life as an undergraduate student in my alma mater's Department of Business Administration. I have worked in Korea, lectured universities in the U.S., New Zealand, and Singapore, and finally retired as a professor at my alma mater's business school, which makes me feel special as a Sung Kyun-in. If college life is the starting point for preparing to take the first step into society as an adult, then I can say that I'm a lucky person who ended my career by living at my alma mater both from the beginning and the end. When I graduated from my alma mater, I got a job at the Korea Development Bank for quite a long time, then decided to resign and go to the Ph.D. program at New York Stare University in the U.S at a late age of 30. People around me said I was crazy because I gave up my stable job at the Korea Development Bank and went to study abroad. During my working life, I would sometimes ask myself what it would be like to study abroad and then go on the path of learning. Life in not possible to choose both academic and practical paths, but in the end, I chose the academic path because I thought I would not regret it later. 2. Please briefly introduce your research field and achievements. After obtaining a doctorate in the United States, I took over to Auckland University in New Zealand, where I first did a lot of research on closed funds and became interested in research on the impact of the tax system on corporate behavior. I also studied the process of changing the capital market in the integration of the international capital market. After teaching at the National University of Singapore for about two years, when I joined my alma mater in 2002, I was expanded to research on corporate dividend policy and capital raising, and I did not feel bored because I did research in a very diverse field, such as financial institution management, derivative financial product analysis, and the behavior of individual and institutional investors. But it is regrettable that the effort to dig deep into a specific field and publish a paper in an international Top Journal was neglected. Fortunately, since I was appointed to my alma mater, I felt very rewarding by publishing one paper each in the best academic journals, which are the world's first and second largest in the field of finance. Compared to foreign universities, Korean universities such as alma mater felt a great sense of achievement by publishing papers in the highest international journals despite difficulty of conducting the highest level of research due to the high burden of lectures and limited purchase of research funding support and statistics. After publishing such a thesis, I participated in an international conference to meet and greet eminent scholars for the first time, and they recognized me immediately by looking at my name tag. I realized the power of the Top Journal publication paper because they said they knew me well by reading my papers. 3. Are there any memorable episodes from your long teaching career? I officiated a lot at the weddings of my disciples, and perhaps because of the occasional comment to have many children, a couple who gave birth to twins, and one disciple had a large family with one son and four daughters, and it was rewarding to be playing the role of a patriot. The disciple kept raising five siblings while working, but after reading night and night, he got his doctorate and sent me a doctoral dissertation. I don't know how proud I am. Also, I have written many letters of recommendation for many students to study abroad, and all of them are doing great academically. In particular, I was very happy to hear that one student had recently been hired as a professor at the Zicklin School of Business the City University of New York's business school, after obtaining a doctorate from UC Irvine. I feel very rewarded to hear that my recommendation has opened the way for studying abroad in the United States. 4. Among the students you met at the business school, is there any student you remember the most? When did you feel rewarede? The graduate school gave a lecture on a new subject, so I put up an advertisement looking for an undergraduate assistant to prepare for the lecture, and a student came and asked for an assistant job. I trained this undergraduate to boldly answer questions and prepare answers from graduate students. Since undergraduate students were required to act as tutors to help graduate students learn this student had to study difficult learning content more than three times that of graduate students in tension. I think this is a kind of quantum jump opportunity for this student. Perhaps this was an opportunity, after graduation, this student got a job at the Financial Supervisory Service and is building a very sincere career. I feel proud that he is married as a couple on the campus of his alma mater business school, working as a couple and raising two children and raising a wonderful family. Another memorable student worked for a financial company, wrote a very good level of doctoral dissertation as a day and night reader, and is an outstanding student who published three good papers together as co-authors and me. This student is not only a Ph.D. in business administration, but also a great disciple who has made a huge career change while reading day and night, so I want to learn his driving force and sincerity. There are many other excellent doctoral students who have published numerous papers as co-researchers with me. I'm so grateful that I really had a lot of lucky with my students. 5. What plans do you have after retirement? Recently, I have often suffered form ill health, so I am reminded of the importance of health. After retirement, I will take a break to recover my stamina and enjoy hobbies that I have not been able to do before. I'm thinking about slowly moving away from professional academic paper work, paying more attention to the spread of knowledge for the general public, and writing a popular book if any part that can contribute to society is found. 6. Lastly, please say something to the members of Sungkyunkwan University's business school Students at Sungkyunkwan University's business school are the best intellectuals who can achieve successful academic results at any university in the world. However, in Korea, ranking based on quantitative test results is too fixed, so it is very unfortunate that there are many young people who are deceived by this and live with a feeling of inferiority for the rest of their lives by deciding that they belong to an inferior group if they make one mistake. I hope that the members of Sungkyunkwan University will make many progressive and courageous attempts to do anything with the confidence that they are intellectuals with the highest level of knowledge in the world. What I felt during the class was that there were so few questions from students. When conducting classes in the U.S., students often have too many questions to make progress, but in Korea, it is a pity that most students take classes passively. There are many cases where wrong questions help you learn. Believing that silly or wrong questions do not exist, the process of continuing to ask questions and trying to make sure they are learning is a very important path to increasing learning effectiveness while cultivating communication skills. If you don't understand, it's important to keep asking questions and keep digging into them until get a full understanding. As AI has emerged as an important future-oriented field these days, undergraduate students in business schools have begun to learn coding. It's a good phenomenon, but cultivating coding skills doesn't make you a leader who leads the future. Rather, even if coding skills are lacking, those who see the big picture and constantly make bold new attempts with rich imagination and curiosity will become the protagonists of creating a better future.
