- Lee Jun-seok, a student of business administration, founded GO EAT, a customized menu matching service.
- "Every time I go out on a date or meet a friend for a meal, I wonder what to eat. It was hard to find a satisfactory menu for both. So I thought it would be nice to have a service like YouTube, Netflix, and Watcha that combines their tastes with a mobile application." Lee Jun-seok (23), who is majoring in business administration at Sungkyunkwan University, started his own business by dreaming of Netflix in the restaurant culture industry. GO EAT, which was set up in March last year, has 12 college students, including Lee, planning team, development team, design team, machine learning and algorithm team. Sales have not been generated yet because they have not started full-fledged services, but their goals are grand. "I want to create a world where we have no choice but to use 'GO EAT' when eating out or ordering delivery food. Lee began to be interested in starting a business after experiencing a two-night and three-day start-up camp when he was a freshman in college. Lee had fun creating things with his own hands. Rather than working for others, I wanted to pioneer my own life. Even if he goes back to my freshman year, he wants to learn coding to do better in business. To college students who want to start a business, Lee says, "Let's try it for now." "GO EAT is still in its infancy, but I dare advise you, don't think about it at first, just try it. No matter what anyone says, you're increasing your chances of success in your idea." Next, Mr. Lee will answer question one by one ▲From left to right, Lee Jun-seok, President of GO EAT, Jeong Na-hyun in planning team, Song Ji-eun and Kim Seong-yeon in design team [Picture = GO EAT] Q. Please introduce GO EAT. A. In short, it is a new customized menu matching service. It analyzes users' tastes and situations and matches menus and restaurants with algorithms and machine learning. Like Netflix and Watcha, the more users use the app, the more accurate the menu matching is. At first, it will focus on marketing on users to secure the number of users, and later provide partnership services with restaurants. Q. Why did you choose the menu matching service as a business item? A. I often thought about what to eat with my girlfriend when we were dating. When I met my friend and ate out, I was worried about what to eat. I was always worried about what menu I could enjoy with the other person. Eating should be fun, but if you don't like the menu itself, it's not a perfect meeting. It's hard to find a satisfactory menu for both, to say the least. The other person's pleasure can be halved if he or she tries to eat the menu I want on purpose even though he or she is not willing to care for me. So I thought that if there is a service that combines the tastes of the two through mobile applications (apps) and matching them, they can both quickly and comfortably choose a common preferred menu. Q. When did you start your own business? A. Start-up activities began in earnest in March 2020. Sungkyunkwan University Campus Town Start-up Care Center's tenant company program helped GO EAT establish itself. Start-up was interested when he experienced a start-up camp at a university when he was a freshman. I participated in the start-up camp for two nights and three days with my major motivation, and it was so fun to create something with my own hands. And as I retook the college entrance exam, I felt it was better to carve out my life on my own than to work for someone else. Q. How did you raise the capital for the start-up? A. There was about 9 million won in capital for the start-up. 4 million won was raised through stock investment, and 5.5 million won was collected from subsidies provided by the start-up competition and Sungkyunkwan University Campus Town. In the future, we're going to get help from government-backed projects and attract investment from Angel Venture Investment. ▲From left to right, Kim Jeong-cheon, Jeong Jeong-bin, Im Min-young, Yeom Sang-hee in development team [Picture = GO EAT] Q. How many team members are with you? A. Currently, two in planning team, six in development team, two in design team, and one in machine learning and algorithm team are gathered. I'm glad I met some great people. I felt that the most important thing in a start-up was to gather team members who had the right will and willingness to end it patiently. In particular, I was a business student, so it was difficult to recruit developers. Thanks to my current team members, I was able to create the best team. Q. How is the market responding to GO EAT? A. The survey found that 251 out of 276 college students (91%) think about the menu when they eat out." 73 out of 101 college students (72%) who used prototypes said they would use GO EAT rather than Baemin, Yogiyo, and Mango Plate if the app was officially released. When the app was released on Google Play Store in February this year, 1,000 people signed up in a month. As part of marketing, we released a psychological test called ‘What would I be if I were a food ingredient?’ and 53,000 people have participated. Regarding the business model, a survey of restaurant owners showed that more than 70 percent were willing to review it positively. Q. When was the most difficult moment in the business? A. We had to hire team members in each field, but we only picked one side a lot, so the development progress was very slow. It's because I was ignorant of app development. As app development did not go as planned and faced difficulties, a large number of team members left. That was the hardest time. The most important thing when starting a business is people. If even the people who make the app don't have faith, no one will use it. Q. Is there a moment when you see a chance of success? A. 53,000 people participated in the marketing psychology test. GO EAT's official Instagram followers exceeded 1,000, and the number of GO EAT app users has exceeded 1,000 so far. When we did a market survey about our business model, we got a positive response and we're looking forward to it. Q. What is the nature of the GO EAT business? A. GO EAT is a new Netflix-like menu recommendation app and coupon stamping app. It is essential to recommend the menu to users according to their tastes and circumstances. The business model plans to receive expenses in the name of customer referral fees from the restaurant when users who subscribe to GO EAT service regularly scan their QR codes while paying after meals at the restaurant. If QR code 'Stamp' is used more than a certain number of times, GO EAT will refund 100% of regular subscription cost to users and accumulate points. Q. Is there anything you wish you had known before starting your own business?\ A. It's a shame that I found out about the preliminary start-up package too late. I think it would have been better if we had prepared faster and raised the capital. And when I started my own business, I would have created a network of talent first. Q. What activities do you want to spend more time on if you go back to college as a freshman? A. I would have double majored in software or joined a coding club so that I could do coding myself. Coding is not mandatory to start a business, but knowing coding gives you many possibilities. You don't have to be good at coding like an app developer. However, if you know how to do coding, you can understand more deeply how many people should be selected in which field, what qualifications should be selected, and how to distribute and plan tasks. Q. If you give advice to college students who want to start a business? A. We're still in the early stages and we've barely started, but I dare advise. The most important thing is not to think at first, but just try. Also, I think it's good to read interviews or autobiographies of those who succeeded in starting a business. It is important to know how they succeeded and how they acted. And no matter what anyone says, you need to change your idea little by little to make it more successful, believing that there is a possibility of success. What I first planned was 'Famous Restaurant Online Virtual Standby Service'. I continued to pivot and now I'm settled as an idea. Q.What is the most worrisome and scary thing about start-up activities? A. I want to be with my current team until I make a more complete product. I'm most afraid of Goit's team members leaving. I'm not even in a position to pay now. What team members want most is achievement. If there is no proper result for this release, we are worried that we will be able to finish it off. Q. Do you have Plan B in case the business didn't go as planned? A. No. I feel like I'm in a jam, but I want to focus on this first. Because it can be an opportunity that comes only once in your life. Q. Do you have a role model? A. Kim Bong-jin, the representative of BAEMIN. I see him after starting my business, he is a great man. In particular, Kim Bong-jin's persistence and efforts seem to be an inaccessible area. After ten years of hard work, the current BAEMIN has been created. I think what famous entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs have in common is persistence that never gives up rather than genius. Q. What's your goal for this year? A. When college students are thinking about what to eat, they should turn on 'GO EAT'. ▲ GO EAT [문광민 기자] [ⓒ 매일경제 & mk.co.kr, 무단전재 및 재배포 금지] 출처 : https://www.mk.co.kr/news/business/view/2021/04/377777/

- Choi Won-seok (Global Management Department 14) "Make at least one story every semester and vacation."
-
Choi Won-seok (entering class of 2014), in Global Management Department, has various experiences during his undergraduate years, including the 2017 National University Student Debate Gold Prize, GPA 4.5 for the previous semester, the President's Award for Outstanding Performance, CPA (1 year preparation), and Internship experience at a foreign bank. He said he wanted to help students at business schools even after graduation because the benefits he received from school were very helpful. Let's hear Choi Won-seok's story who is willing to help students’ development of capabilities and exploring careers. 1. Hello, please introduce yourself. Hello, I'm Choi Won-seok, majoring in Global Management. After graduation, I entered Samsung Electronics as a financial worker. I had wanted to enjoy a leisurely campus life after passing the CPA exam, but it didn’t work and I graduated early in one semester because of Corona 19. Briefly saying, I also received a gold medal at the 2017 National University Student Debate Contest. It was my young ambition to raise the status of the school. If you are interested in it, please search it on YouTube! <2017 National University Student Debate Contest Final Round> 2. I heard that you will be awarded the Presidential Award for Outstanding Performance! Please tell us how you feel. I feel like I'm getting a special congratulation when I graduate. Looking back, I often drew this moment when I was studying, but I'm very happy to see it comes true. I wish I had received this award directly at the offline graduation ceremony, but I'm sorry I couldn't.
3. You got excellent grades every semester, do you have any tips for this? I will answer a little longer because the junior students might want to know the details. First, registering for a course is very important. During the vacation, I looked at each professor's class plan and decided which class best fits my preference. Since I am a test-type person, I tried to avoid classes that have a high proportion of group projects or reports. I avoided classes that do not have a clear standard of grading as much as possible. I also considered the tendency of professors to give grades through the EVERY TIME lecture review. I only took the class of a Credit God/Good Rate professor who had a clear rate assessment. In other words, for good grades, you need enough time to look for a course before you apply. Second, communication with the professor is important. I send an e-mail to the professor if I don’t get his requirements when doing group assignments or preparing for the exam. Don't be afraid of mail with your professor. If you actively communicate with your professor, he will remember your name and it could be helpful to get good grades. Even more, you could get ‘+’ at the end. Of course, it is the main points of getting good grades that you can clearly understand the intentions of professors. Third, good relationships are important. When I got 4.5 in the first semester, I was really happy when my friends congratulated me and acknowledged me. It's really motivating to be able to congratulate someone when I'm good at it. Also, if there is a good relationship, my friends give me past exams or tell me what I missed in class. And the Global Management Department has a lot of group projects, and if you have already established a good relationship, you can bring in competent members, and there will be less conflicts while doing group projects. Don't ever get angry while doing your group project! 4. I heard that the CPA preparation period is one year. What do you think is the biggest factor in the preparation and quick passing? As I'll tell you later, when I was an intern at a foreign bank, the person sitting next to me recommended me CPA. "When you come to the world, you have to go through with your bare fists as liberal arts major students, so it's better to carry a weapon in your hand.", these words touched me a lot. I think the biggest reason for the quick pass is my excellent grades I got every semester, which I mentioned early. Originally, I had no intention of preparing for a CPA, but it helped me to study hard at school every semester. Thanks to this basis, I could absorb the content fast, and have a sense of modernity. "All you have to do is make it to the top 1100 in the country!", I reassured myself. And most of all, it was very helpful to enter 'Song Hoe-heon,' the school's examination class. Fine desks and attendance system made me concentrate on my studies, and the mock test twice a month allowed me to measure my current position and set up a study strategy for which subjects to work harder on. 5. What did you feel from your internship at a foreign bank? I was an intern at the Seoul branch of a French bank called ‘Societe Generale.’ As an intern, I felt that dealing with the number of companies fit me and I had a lot of fun at work. But what I felt was, 'I can't just study well.' I felt quite different from the atmosphere demanded by Top tier Financial Services. High grades didn't impress them very much. After I realized this, I decided to have a CPA as my own weapon. 6. If you have any other meaningful activities, programs, etc. that you have attended in the Department of Global Management, please tell me. The Global Career Tour and Exchange Student Scholarship in the Department of Global Management are the most memorable. I've never been abroad in my life, but I went to Paris, France, for the first time while participating in a global career tour. I still can't forget the excitement of that time. I received almost all the support from the department for airfare, accommodation, and food. After finishing the Arc de Triomphe tour, it was late, so my colleagues, seniors, juniors, and professors rushed to take the subway. It seems to be a great benefit to be able to go abroad with the money from the department when I was a college student. And thanks to 'Exchange Student Scholarship', I was able to visit Germany in abundance. It is a good system that allows students who are burdened with staying abroad to go to exchange students. < Global Business Department iCore > 7. What are your future career and goals? I don't have a big goal because I'm still a novice in society. However, I want to be acknowledged by as many people as possible in my current job. I think it will lead me to the next opportunity. I also want to hang out with people outside my field. I want to be a person who can blend in well not seeing only a small part of the world. No matter what I do, I want to make a lot of people who are willing to follow me and work with me. 8. Lastly, please give me some advice for the students at Business School. Make at least one story every semester and vacation. It's like the Marvel series. Marvel Studios gathered fans and created the Avengers worldview by making about three movies every year. Try to plan special experiences every time and meet new people. It's like a YouTuber struggling to make enough contents. There will be bigger and bigger stories and great people around you. I made a story that involved Samsung Dream Class, Discussion Club, National University Student Debate, Financial Association, Intern, Exchange Student, CPA exam preparation, and I met good friends, seniors who helped me, and juniors who I could help. Just like Marvel, who never disappoints the audience every time, make a world that is distinct from others and fill in a lot of stories. -

[Special Feature] 'It's very helpful to read the economic journals in your spare time.'
- Business School is strengthening education and research capabilities that are core values of our university, and is striving to foster talent for student success and future value creation. To this end, we hired four new teachers with outstanding capabilities in each field in the first semester of 2021, and their majors are marketing (1), management information (1), accounting (1), and finance (1). We met Professor Yoo Joon-wook of Accounting Major, a new teacher who became a family of Business school this time, and listened to "major research activities, majors, and future plans." Q1. Hello Professor, Nice to meet you! Please introduce yourself. I have taught accounting at California State University, Marshall University and Winnipeg University in Canada, and I have been teaching at Sungkyunkwan University since this semester. I'm happy to work at Sungkyunkwan University with great professors with a long tradition. Q2. Please introduce your major briefly, and why did you choose your major? Accounting is the study of providing information about various forms of organizations, including businesses and non-profit organizations, with validity and reliability. Members of business, investors, and regulators demand a variety of information based on different needs, and the accounting system must satisfy these needs. I was fascinated by accounting’s down-to-earth characteristic compared to other areas of Business Administration. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting at Sungkyunkwan University Business school and your future plans. Sungkyunkwan University is a high ranking research institution not only in Asia but also in the world, so I am honored to work as a teacher. I want to make good research results by doing new research in the field I'm interested in. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. In this semester, I am teaching ‘Introduction to managerial accounting’ in English. It is a subject which study concepts and techniques that managers of companies and non-profit organizations must know to make effective decisions. Q5. What are your future research plans? I'm currently working on taxes. In particular, I do research on the progressiveness and investment of taxes and asset prices. Q6. Please tell us about your ideal educator. When I am in class, I can notice that there is an unexpectedly large deviation in one class. I don't think that a student always makes a bad grade when he or she makes a bad grade once. They often experience personal difficulties and temporarily fail to produce results. I give a lecture thinking not only of the top students but also of the middle and lower students. Also, I would like to provide a helpful education in the long-run for students, even though the meeting with me is brief (one or two semesters). Q7. If you have anything you want to say to students who study hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School, please tell them! When you study in college, you spend time with people of similar ages and interests, but when you go to society, you have to socialize with people of variety ages and discuss and satisfy various interests. It's not easy to communicate smoothly with various people, so I think it'd be good to prepare in advance. One way to recommend, reading economic journals from time to time to build up instructional knowledge can help you communicate with a wide variety of people.

Moon Chul-woo, Professor of Justice of Impact, published
- The company had been operated by 'Shareholder-centeredness', which represents shareholder interests first. It's changed now. The book mentioned that the management philosophy is shifting to "Stakeholderism." Stakeholderism means that companies should consider society and the environment, making efforts for stakeholders such as customers, local communities, and employees. "Business Round Table," a committee of global companies CEO, declared in 2019 that "the reason why profit companies exist is to promote the value of stakeholders." Stakeholderism starts from the consciousness that social polarization and climate crisis would threaten the foundation itself for profit enterprise to survive. Stakeholderism is now essential for businesses. It is not a "choice" for humanity or volunteering. The author explained, “It is impossible to solve social problems only with the financial resources devoted by public and non-profit organizations. The private organization should move.” ‘Impact management’ is a strategy for stakeholderism. In other words, the important thing is treating economic activity and impact performance equally. The book describes impact management is fundamentally different from companies' social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable management. However, there are no indicators that objectively measures impact performance now. Several organizations have developed its methods over the past 20 years, but they are not integrated. It is common that the impact level of the same company varies depending on which institutions did. The author added, “Only when proper measurements are made can impact management prove that it does not undermine shareholders' interests, and laws and systems can settle impact management as a mainstream method.” The book introduces IMP as an alternative to solving these problems. IMP is a integrated methodology for defining and measuring impact. More than 2,000 global organizations worked together to maintain objectivity. Although not perfect, the author still describes IMP as "the most common agreement on impact". In fact, the U.N. Development Program (UNDP) announced it will adopt IMP and measure the achievement of SDGs. IMP classifies ‘impact’ into three types. First, it sees how much companies and investors have reduced their negative impact on society and the environment. Second is whether they provide charitable benefits to stakeholders (employees, suppliers, communities, etc.). The last is how much the they put resources into solving social problems. In addition, the book introduces the contribution strategies of investors who provide private resources, and practical examples of introducing IMP methodologies to create impact.
