- Prof. Hong -Joo Jung, innovator and leader in overseas training
- "Thanks for giving me an opportunity to visit leading overseas companies, to take lectures and to find strategic ideas.” Fifteen winters ago, at the entrance of Kimpo Airport, an executive of a major insurance company said this while grabbing the hand of Professor Jung Hong Joo of SKKU. The two met there by chance and at the time, the executive was participating in the overseas training program hosted by SKKU. The executive’s participation was made possible by the Professor Jung’s recommendation. He thanked Professor Jung for the opportunity to “break held stereotypes by looking at leading financial organizations”. Even though short overseas training programs for undergraduate and graduate students are now widespread, it was a somewhat unfamiliar concept 15 years ago in the 1990s. Professor Jung was the first to plan the overseas program at that time. From then on, he sent workers attending graduate school and undergraduate students abroad to help them jump out of “the small pond” and learn in “the open sea”. Until now he has successfully arranged over 40 overseas programs. Since his first program, SKKU graduate and undergraduate students, called saladent (a compound of salary man and student), have learned in and experienced America, Japan, and Europe plus emerging countries such as China, India, Brazil and other nations. Professor Jung’s list of program countries is now over 40 nations long. Overseas training as people changer Professor Jung describes field-based education as often more important than just lectures. "Although it is important to give lectures in a university, there is no better education than making students actually visit the field and directly learn through overseas training program experience.” He added that “it is important to look outside when everyone’s looking in”. While forming close relationships with foreign companies and universities, Professor Jung has now become one of a handful of professors who have a specialty in insurance. He has published specialized insurance books like ‘Understanding Insurance Marketing’ and ‘Development of Evaluation Criteria for Occupational Health and Safety Insurance Services’. Professor Jung obtained his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Jung is known for his natural affection toward students. He pays close attention to students’ concerns and enjoys debate in his programs. He has also successfully managed the Program for Talented Students of East Asia (Tokyo University) hosted by SKKU Trade Research Center until the end of last month. As soon as the Japan program ended, he began his busy schedule with evaluating Kyoto University as an evaluator of Asia Region Business Schools. When asked about his vision, he laughed answering that he “wants to establish a school in a developing nation”. - MEST to evaluate SKKU competence
- MEST, ranked first in faculty securement rate · employment rate and other 8 areas Big gap between Seoul · Rural universities … In the evaluation of university competence carried out by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), Sungkyunkwan University and Korea University received the highest scores. According to the evaluation, among four-year universities located in Seoul, SKKU and Korea University both scored a total of 35 out of 40 in 8 criteria. Kyung Hee University received 34 points while Seoul National University, University of Seoul, Seogang University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University received scores of 33. Ewha Woman’s University and Chung Ang University earned 32 and 31 points, respectively. Dongguk University received 30, while Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Konkuk University and Soongsil University were all tied at 29 points. This competence evaluation covers 8 criteria including enrolled student recruitment, faculty retention, employment, regular position employment, output of theses registrations on National Research Foundation of Korea, output of theses registrations in international journals, freshmen enrollment and student retention. The evaluation gives marks of 1 to 5 points for each criterion. In order to help students and their parents compare relative competitiveness, MEST has added the evaluation results to the section on academic information of its website. Until now, many outside sources including media companies have been rating universities by their departments. This is the first time that the government rated universities using an objective index. SKKU got perfect score on the enrolled student recruitment rate, faculty retention rate, number of theses registrations in international journals and regular position employment rate, but it scored only 3 points on the employment rate. Korea University received full marks on the enrolled student recruitment rate, regular position employment rate, number of theses registrations in international journals, student retention rate. Korea University’s number of theses registrations for the National Research Foundation of Korea was somewhat low at 3 points. Universities with good marks received high scores overall, but those with low marks were generally weak in faculty retention and employment. The gap between major universities in Seoul and rural universities was especially noticeable. The major universities got relatively high scores of around 30 points, while most of the rural universities earned around 10 points. One rural private university in Chungnam received one point in each criterion and scored a total of 8. Among colleges, Yeungjin College received the highest with 35 points and Yonam Institute of Digital Technology, Gyung Nam Provincial, Nam Hae College and Christian College of Nursing followed with 34 points. The evaluation’s results are going to be used for the university restructuring that MEST is now working on. It is highly likely that the universities with low competences may be targeted for elimination. One MEST employee commented that “this evaluation is fair because it is based on an objective index”. Meanwhile, the SKKU Business School was selected as a “Big 4” business school in the 2009 Business School Evaluation organized by Hankyung Business and M&C Research. This proved SKKU’s potential and excellence by getting ranking with traditional leaders as SNU Business School. 「Source – Saegae Daily excerpt from 2010. 2. 5 edition」 ● Reference: http://www.segye.com/Articles/NEWS/SOCIETY/Article.asp?aid=20100203004272&subctg1=&subctg2= ● Academy Information (SKKU evaluation result) : http://www.academyinfo.go.kr/ischoolAction.do

- List of Korea’s 50 Most Admired Companies released
- On March 23rd Fortune Korea and Sungkyunkwan University Institute of Management Research released Fortune’s 2010 List of Korea’s Most Admired Companies. “This is meaningful in that it is the first time that Fortune’s unique research methodology has been applied in Korea,” said Prof. Dong-Ok Cha, director of the Institute of Management Research. This is different from previous ratings done by other institutes in Korea in that this report surveyed executives, directors, and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. Sungkyunkwan University Institute of Management Research and Fortune Korea considered 271 companies with revenue of more than 1 trillion won and selected 124 companies ranked in the top 50 % for 10 industrial sectors. In total 3,471 people took part in this survey, 2,548 of the general public, 766 industry-related, 121 experts. The expert group was composed of researchers at domestic institutes of management research, securities analysts, and consultants. The survey resulted in lists of The 50 Most Admired Korean Companies and The Most Admired Korean Companies by Industry. To arrive at the 50 Most Admired Korean Companies overall, the people who took part in this industry survey responded to select the 10 companies they admired most. Respondents chose from a list made up of the companies that ranked in the top 50% covering 10 industrial sectors. The industry-related respondents and the expert group considered quality of products and services, human resources development and maintenance as core virtues. According to the survey result, Samsung Electronics ranked 1st with the support from 2,501 of 3471 respondents followed by POSCO, Hyundai Motor, LG Electronics, and SK Telecom. Eight affiliates of Samsung Group, 3 affiliates of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, and 2 affiliates of LG, Doosan, and STX made it onto the list of The 50 Most Admired Korean Companies. It was noticeable to see that there was a gap between a company’s size in sales and its level of admiration.
