[New faculty special] ‘Education that helps people to ask good questions is important’
-
Our business school is strengthening its educational and research capabilities, which are its core values, and is striving to cultivate talent for student success and future value creation. To this end, new faculty with outstanding capabilities were invited in the second semester of the 2023 school year. This time, we met Professor Park Tae-yoon of
, a new faculty member who has joined the College of Business Administration family, and heard about his ‘major research activities, major, and future plans’. Q1. Hello, professor, it's nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself. Hello. My name is ParkTae-yoon, a professor majoring in management who has been newly appointed since last August. Nice to meet you. I returned to Korea after working as a professor at Vanderbilt University, Owen Graduate School of Management for 7 years and at Cornell University, Department of Human Resources Studies for 4 years. I didn't think so either, but I worked as a professor in the U.S. for 11 years. I am very excited and happy to come to my home country and see the students on campus. In particular, Sungkyunkwan University's business school has recently grown significantly to the point where it is noticeable overseas, and I am glad that I can be a part of that growth story. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major and what made you choose it? I am researching ways for organizations and employees to thrive together. Specifically, we are looking at how organizations can define the way they establish relationships with employees, and which types of organization-employee relationships will be more effective and in what environments. In relation to this, a lot of research has been done on the design of organizational systems, especially turnover systems, compensation systems, and parental leave systems. In the past, when I decided to go to business school as an undergraduate, I went because I heard it would help me get a job, but then the IMF financial crisis occurred, so-called popular workplaces closed down, and everyone was confused about work and life. , it made me think again about what it means to be good at getting a job. I had been thinking about finding something meaningful to do within business administration, but I found it interesting to discuss how the management field balances the interests of organizations and employees, so I studied and soon became a producer and transmitter of related knowledge. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans. I've just been in office, but seeing students teaming, discussing, and presenting all over campus gives me a lot of energy. In the future, I would like to help students both inside and outside the classroom so that they can have a meaningful college experience. In this regard, if there is a student who is interested in research and teaching, I would like to actively support them, help them study abroad, and foster future students. Additionally, there are many professors in our business school who are good at research and teaching, so I would like to learn a lot and collaborate through conversations with them. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. Currently, I am teaching research methodology in master's and doctoral courses, and next year I plan to lecture on personnel management or human resource management. In order for an organization to be managed effectively, activities such as establishing strategies and goals and introducing new technologies are important, but in order for all such activities to be carried out and operated effectively, it ultimately depends on what mindset and attitude the people working within the organization have when working. It may be important, but there is a tendency to dismiss these aspects of practice and operation as the realm of art, not science. In my lecture, I plan to make time to discuss human resource management cases and look at related scientific evidence. Q5. What are your future research plans? We plan to continue researching the relationship between organizations and employees and related management systems. So far, I have done a lot of research on overseas cases and data in the United States, but now I am thinking of discussing it more closely with Korean company officials and, if possible, conducting practical research to change actual organizations. Q6. Please tell us what you think is the ideal educator. I think education that helps you ask good questions is important. Although it is important to search for good answers, there is pleasure in asking good questions and creating opportunities for other people to have fun conversations and think together. To ask such good questions, you need to do a lot of research and think about it yourself. Therefore, I think it is an important role in university education to train students to think in that way and create opportunities for such questions and discussions. Q7. Please tell me if you have anything you want to say to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University's business school! Don't be too impatient. It is necessary and important to think hard about everything and work with passion, but I don't want you to think that such efforts will necessarily bring rewards in the direction you think. Efforts can bring rewards in unexpected ways. And try lots of fun things! -

- Business Administration Professor Lee Eun-joo's research team announces consumer response research on medical artificial
- Professor Lee Eun-joo's research team from the Department of Business Administration recently published research results on how medical consumers make decisions in the academic journal Psychology & Marketing. Although AI-assisted healthcare is being discussed in earnest, little is known about how consumers experience medical AI and whether they use these healthcare providers for follow-up treatment. In this study, the research team studied ‘the impact of medical AI and personalized services received from human doctors on medical consumers’ intention to revisit.’ The study found that regardless of the type of healthcare provider (human or AI), consumers tended to feel more happy after receiving 'highly personalized' medical advice than after receiving 'less personalized' advice. Meanwhile, consumers preferred follow-up visits with human doctors, even when they received ‘less personalized’ consultations. Through this, it was found that the variable ‘empathy’ influenced the correlation between the type of medical service provider and intention to revisit. Additionally, they found that ‘highly personalized’ medical consultations resulted in greater activation of the anterior cingulate cortex than ‘less personalized’ medical consultations, and that this activation was also correlated with participants’ intention to revisit. Additionally, the temporo-occipital fusiform cortex was more active when visiting a human doctor rather than a medical AI, regardless of the level of personalization, and this activation also correlated with participants' intention to revisit. These results suggest that even medical AI, which can highly mimic humans, cannot currently replace human doctors, so human doctors remain important in providing medical consultation and treatment. Meanwhile, the research team used neuroimaging (fMRI) along with behavioral experiments to reveal neural processes of perception, emotion, and decision-making that could not be known from data. The research team said that this gave in-depth insight into neuromarketing that could not be obtained through surveys alone. First author Jang Yi-yeon said, 'It is meaningful to provide new insights into research methodology through interdisciplinary research such as marketing, psychology, and neuroscience. We will continue follow-up research using neuroscience and sensory marketing in consumer well-being and healthcare." The research team's results were published in Psychology & Marketing (IF 6.7). ※Paper name: Consumers’ Responses to Personalized Service from Medical Artificial Intelligence and Human Doctors ※Author name: Jang Yi-yeon (first author), Dam Mun-yeong (second author), Professor Lee Eun-ju (corresponding author)

- Lee Min-seo (GBA 22), Interview on the selection of Jungbong Alumni Scholarship Students for the 2023 school year
- 1. Hello, please introduce yourself first. Hello, I am Lee Min-seo, a second-year student in the Department of Global Business Administration. At first, I was worried about whether I would be able to adapt well to my major classes because I entered the regular high school through regular admission and had no experience living abroad, but I am trying hard to catch up. After enrolling, I tried to experience various activities, and am currently preparing for my final activity in ‘Steroids’, the band club of the Department of Global Business Administration. 2. I heard that you have been selected as a Jungbong Alumni Scholarship student for the 2023 school year. Please briefly share your thoughts on receiving the award. Thank you for the great opportunity. As I become a second grader, I wanted to learn a lot academically, and I applied for the Jungbong Alumni Scholarship. Through the scholarship, I will be able to grow and develop on my own. Thank you again. 3. You are also a scholarship recipient with excellent academic records. Do you have your own secret? Since the evaluation method is different for each subject, I think it is important to look at the evaluation method carefully and study accordingly. It is important to look at the syllabus and lecture reviews before registering for a course and then choose a course that suits you well, so I recommend that you read the lecture reviews carefully before registering for a course. It is a good idea to take notes as much as possible during class. If your writing speed is slow, you can use a laptop to write down and organize them later. 4. Are there any activities on or off campus that you're currently working on? If you have any activities that you remember the most, please introduce them to us. Currently, I am working as an SME digital marketing supporter on campus hosted by Naver. This is a project to run search advertisements through Biz Money in cooperation with small business owners. I am actively participating in online marketing activities using the Naver platform as much as possible, such as registering search ads and creating short forms with my team members. It is not easy to grasp the direct marketing effect, but I think the advantage is that I can learn about Naver's search advertising system and do digital marketing myself. Last year, as a member of the school's management society, we conducted four rounds of industry-academia cooperation and various activities related to business issues. By working on a team project with other academic members, I was able to learn about various issues related to business administration and practical work through meeting with working staff. 5. What are your future career paths and goals? I haven't decided on a clear course yet. Previously, I was interested in marketing and mainly engaged in related activities, but I plan to learn more about accounting during the summer vacation. 6. Lastly, please say something to the students at the business school. I think there are some people who have a clear plan for their career path, and there are also people like me who feel vague anxiety because they do not have a clear goal yet. However, if you experience as diverse as possible, I think you will be able to find your aptitude soon. I hope everyone leaves pleasant memories at Sungkyunkwan University. Thanks for reading
