- Nurturing Creative Convergence Talent to Reach Top 10 Rank in Asia
- Nurturing Creative Convergence Talent to Reach Top 10 Rank in Asia SKKU’s “New Challenge Project” from the Leader of Convergence Education Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) is carrying out its “New Challenge Project” which is based on convergence education, global alliances, academic-industrial cooperation, and management innovation in order to lead global issues and create positive changes in society. The name “New Challenge Project” suggests the specific plans of action for SKKU’s Vision 2020, the purpose of which is entering into the top 10 ranked universities in Asia and the top 50 ranked universities in the world. A main attribute of the plan is multilateral convergence education that includes software (SW) lectures, convergence between majors, reinforcement of academic-industrial cooperation, and promotion of engagement between foreign universities. SKKU has leading innovative software education for training SW professionals and convergence specialists with global competitiveness to keep pace with the rapid growth of SW education nowadays. Following Sungkyunkwan University’s selection as the SW Core University in 2015 all freshmen are taking basic SW courses. Furthermore, SKKU established the Sungkyunkwan Software Education iNstitute (SSEN) to teach SW to non-software and computer engineering majors. Through SSEN, SKKU will change academic SW programs, which up till now have been developer-oriented, to general education. Sungkyunkwan University is planning to create SW college by combining the Department of Software and the Department of Computer Engineering. SKKU will conduct a special entrance process for 60 students with SW talents and offer them 4 years of full scholarships from 2018. “The primary goal of SW education is cultivating thinking skills, not simply training developers. Students can learn logic, and acquire analytical and thinking skills in the process of analyzing problems by utilizing computer principles and making algorithms”, said Prof. Jae Hyoun Kim of SKKU’s Department of Computer Engineering. Another convergence education program Sungkyunkwan University has is the “C-School Project” by SKKU’s University Education Innovation Center. Students from every year team up as one group to solve problems based on integrated thinking beyond flat, major-oriented studying. The curriculum contains activities such as visiting new growing companies with global prospects, and the global camp with the leading universities in the fields of SW and Informatics. “The convergence education of the C-School is a creative way of educating that breaks the walls between majors and helps students achieve their dreams through genuine convergence. We will offer the program to students from all of the departments in the school”, said Sang Hoon Bae, Chief of the University Education Innovation Center. SKKU is establishing an academic-industrial foundation by expanding and reorganizing the research institutes in the school and building an academic-industrial cooperation system based on strong research abilities. In addition, the Sungkyun Advanced Institute of Nano Technology and Sungkyun Interfaculty Collaboration Center were recently established for convergence education between departments and promoting research. For this purpose, many research and education teams such as Future Nano Science Education and ICT Convergence Facility Administrative Education are receiving funding that reaches nearly 6,840,000 USD. Also, the Faculty of Engineering is running a business team for nurturing specialists that have a deep understanding and practical abilities in materials. To strengthen academic-industrial engagement, SKKU has recruited former executives who worked at companies as professors exclusively appointed for industry-university cooperation. The assessment of professors was also changed from quantitative evaluation to a differentiated assessment method such as technology transfer and job creation. As a result, Sungkyunkwan University has attained 329.4 billion won in research funding which has increased significantly since 2010 when it was at 219.9 billion won. SKKU’s international SCI thesis performance has also doubled from 2,782 in the year 2010 to 4,865 in 2015. The university was ranked number one in Korea in terms of SCI publications with an average of 0.8 per professor. The amount of paper citations per international thesis was 8.53 and there were 317 paper citations in the top 1% of theses which means that they were not only quantitatively high but also showed high qualitative results. To foster talented students who possess professionalism and practicality, the Sungkyunkwan Graduate School is also reinforcing industry-university links. SKKU recently opened a Grand ICT Research Center in Pangyo Techno Valley where 80,000 venture entrepreneurs are gathered. The Grand ICT Research Center will be running consortiums in various research areas such as intelligent ICT convergence and convergence SW development with the university as well as enterprises by operating the Pangyo SW Graduate school of Convergence. Through this, Sungkyunkwan University is creating a hub to handle the development of new technologies, transfer of technology, and creation of patents which are all directly connected to business ventures. With this effort, SKKU has earned high acclaim as an ‘outstanding’ institution, which is the highest ranking among the 85 universities in the Leaders in INdustry-university Cooperation (LINC) evaluation last year. The income generated by technological transfer was 2.5 billion won in 2010 which increased up to 3.7 billion won last year. Sungkyunkwan University is also reinforcing the links between overseas universities to foster global creative leaders in the era of internationalization. The university has expanded the joint research between the EU’s prestigious universities and America’s best public universities while at the same time developing a network with Australia’s research-centered universities. This year, SKKU is holding a joint forum with the University of Minnesota in the fields of Nanotechnology and Physics, the SKKU-PKU Forum with Beijing University, and another forum with Leiden University in the Netherlands. Sungkyunkwan University has signed exchange agreements with 921 universities in 76 countries, providing multiple double degree systems and exchange scholarship programs. There are currently 1,400 students studying overseas and 2,400 foreign students studying at SKKU. Also, more than 100 students each year are receiving dual degrees from prestigious overseas universities such as MIT, Indiana University, Fudan University, Beijing University, and Birmingham University. Sungkyunkwan University students are enjoying the opportunity to live all over the world and develop their global mindsets and language skills through international programs. SKKU’s 7+1 Supreme Studies Program provides the students with the chance to study in leading UK and US universities such as Kings College London, Indiana University, the University of Minnesota, Perdue University, and Edinburgh University. Students can take advantage of using the 7+1 Regional Expert Program and gain regional expertise by studying in countries that are not widely known in the second and third world such as Eastern Europe, Central and South America, and Africa. SKKU also has active academic exchange and research cooperation with overseas universities. A university staff member said, “We are currently running exchanges in the engineering academic field with the world’s most prestigious schools such as MIT and Beijing University. We are also conducting research by inviting technology centers such as the world’s best chemical company, BASF’s, Asia and Pacific R&D Center and the fourth ranked petrochemical company in the world, SABIC’s, Electrical, Electronic, and Lighting Technology Center.” The results of Sungkyunkwan University’s innovation and effort can be checked in several objective indexes. The number of students per full-time professor and the percentage of full-time professors are each 21.3 and 101.14%, which is the highest among the main private universities in Korea. Furthermore, the university has achieved a 231.2% total educational restitution rate which exceeded the nation’s average of 116.6%. SKKU had ranked 1st in employment rate among the 4-year universities of Korea with a rate of 68.3% in 2015. As for the global assessments of Sungkyunkwan University, it has ranked 16th in Asia and 148th in world according to the Times Higher Education’s (THE) university rankings and 17th in Asia and 118th in the world according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings. SKKU has also been selected as “the most noticed university around the world since 2009” along with MIT, Stanford University, Munich University, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich according to QS in 2014.

- SKKUZINE Cover Story - Sungkyun Tutor & Tutee
- < SKKUZINE Cover Story - Sungkyun Tutor & Tutee > The grading systems between universities and high schools show many differences in the methods ofevaluation. A few students may have difficulties studying because they encounter new lecture styles and high level lectures. For those who are stressed out about how to study, this cover story introduces a program called ‘Sungkyun Tutor & Tutee’. Last September, Cover Story reported on the ‘Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)’. The CTL was established in March of 2001 for the purpose of realizing the school’s long-term vision, a big jump into the world’s top 100 research-oriented universities, by supporting teaching & learning, developing research, and building an effective education infrastructure. CTL has been providing many programs such as learning consultation and teaching & learning support. One of programs CTL provides, the ‘Sungkyun Tutor and Tutee’ program, has been running since the second half of 2009. This program is open every semester. From last year, not only major courses but also liberal arts courses have become subjects in this program. -Members of ‘Sungkyun Tutor & Tutee’ Four different groups participate in this program: CTL, teaching tutor, tutor, and tutee. CTL intermediates between tutor and tutee, and manages the program by supporting teaching & learning. Teaching tutor, which mainly consists of graduate students, is in charge of leading communication between CTL and tutoring groups, and monitoring how tutoring groups work on/offline. The tutor and tutee program is mainly intended for undergraduate students. Those who have taken a course that they want to teach in their first year and have gotten an outstanding grade (GPA over 4.0) in the course are qualified to be a tutor. A tutee should be a student who is taking the course in the corresponding semester. This program is aimed for helping tutees who have difficulties studying certain courses by allowing them to study corresponding courses with those who scored highly in it. Students are allowed to apply for this program by making a tutor-tutee group themselves. -Orientation From 14th of March to 24th of June, the first semester program of this year has a 15 week work period. The first official event for this program is the orientation. To get detailed information that is different year to year, students need to come to the orientation. The orientation will be held on the 23rd of March from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at the Suwon campus and the 24th of March at the same time at the Seoul campus. In the orientation, tutors and tutees will meet for the first time and they will design and plan how to work together. They will decide when and where they will meet and which roles each participant will be in charge of. After students have a learning capability test, the orientation will end. -How they work Tutor & Tutee groups should do their tutoring work over ten times and over 15 hours within 4 months. They are obliged to write an activity report right after every tutoring session. They must hand in their reports through NAVER cafe. Besides activity reports, they also need to hand in evaluation reports between the 6th and 22nd of June. With this, tutors need to submit a final result report and tutees need to submit a review of the program. Tutors not only tutor but also manage a teaching support fund. Tutors can receive supporting funds once they hand in activity receipts and demands for payment between the 20th and 24th of June. Teaching supporting funds will be delivered collectively to the tutors’ bank accounts and the maximum is 100,000 KRW (150,000 KRW once the number of members exceeds 8, including tutors). As this is a national fund, students are bound to submit activity receipts to receive the funds. -Benefits of the program Completion certificates (Non-academic program) will be issued for tutors who actively participate in the program. Students can get this certificate on GLS by themselves. By completing non-academic programs, students can accumulate points that can help them acquire school rewards such as scholarships. Unlike previously when only tutors could obtain benefits, from this semester both tutors and tutees can receive completion certificates and accumulate points. That said, it is restricted to tutees who have been given an evaluation over 3 points by their tutor and teaching tutor. On top of this, their work hours will count as school volunteer time which is needed for the Insung-pum graduation requirement. Students can receive a minimum of 15 hours and a maximum 20 hours of volunteer time as they work. The evaluation report that tutors and tutees submit is referred to when they are awarded. Tutors and tutees are awarded according to the sum of the tutor and tutee’s evaluation (40%) and the teaching tutor and CTL evaluation (30%). First prize tutors will get award certificates and win a prize of 200,000 KRW. Also, they will get additional points when they apply to be exchange students. Second prize tutors and tutees will get award certificates and win a prize of 150,000 KRW and 100,000 KRW, respectively. -Tutoring alteration and withdrawal It is forbidden to withdraw from the program after a tutoring group has been approved. There will be disadvantages someone rejoins the program after they withdraw from it. If a tutor wants to disband their group or enter into another group, they need to submit a disband report or alteration application form to the CTL (ctl_skku@skku.edu). They also need to submit an alteration application form when they want to let tutees in or out. Sungkyun Tutoring not only provides an opportunity for deeper understanding of specific subjects, but is also a chance to meet new people and make new bonds. This is helpful for tutees to lead their studies themselves as well. -Researcher, Yong Jung Sun Researcher Yong, Jung Sun is in charge of the Sungkyun Tutoring Program in CLT. What is the advantage of the points which are given to students when they carry out a tutoring program? Students can accumulate points whenever they take non-academic programs in school. If the points are accumulated according to certain standards, the students will have chances to get scholarships. -What does Sungkyun Tutoring aim to do? We take a lot of one-sided lectures by professors in the university just like we did in high school. We concluded that group studies outside the classroom are a way to differentiate what we do in the university from what we did in high school. What we aim for with Sungkyun Tutoring is not one-sided lectures by the tutors. A tutor is just a student who studied the same thing earlier and leads the exchange. A tutor is not there just to deliver knowledge. We do not want tutees to just passively attend another one-sided lecture. A lot of tutors say that they realized that they did not know everything about the lectures they attended. It would be ideal if tutors also learn from the tutees and tutees motivate each other and generate positive influence. That is where the group study starts. And tutors say, through group study they experience what it is like to be a leader and learn how a good leader should act. It is best to lead group studies into active, spontaneous learning. I think group study is possible outside the classroom. What you can gain from Sungkyun Tutoring is not only a good GPA, but also new relationships. It is hard to participate in something in the university without drinking. I think that it would be a fresh pleasure to meet new people and become friends without involving alcohol. A lot of tutors and tutees are saying that it was a bit weird at first, but now it is quite fun to discuss and debate about academic issues. Sungkyun Tutoring is a program recommended for SKKU students who want to achieve a high GPA, build relationships, volunteer in an activity, and make money all at once. This program usually starts receiving tutor applications two weeks before the semester starts, and recruits tutees on the 2nd week of a semester. Tutoring for first semester of 2016 has already ended, but if you are interested, please check the application period for the next semester and participate. - SKKU in THE’s Top 25 Universities over 400 Years Old
- To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Times Higher Education recently ranked the top 25 universities over 400 to determine the best ancient institutions. Sungkyunkwan University has been ranked 19th, becoming the only Korean institution included in the ranking. Data and Analytics Director at THE, Duncan Ross, said that the list shows, “The origin of our modern university systems as they move away from the religious training institutions they were, into something that was starting to become more recognizable.” “Despite all the evidence that points to Shakespeare being from the English Midlands, the conspiracy theories regarding who he might have been or where he may have been from refuse to die away. So, we thought it would be fun to look at the universities that a more educated Shakespeare might have attended,” said Director Ross. Meanwhile, SKKU has ranked 16th in Asia (2015 Times Higher Education) claiming the first place of all comprehensive private universities in Korea for the second consecutive year. The results of the ranking are calculated based on scores from thirteen indexes including university-industry collaboration, education, research paper citations, research capability, internationalization, etc.

- President Chung's New Year's Address
- Respectfully to all in Sungkyunkwan University, With the duty of the 20th presidency, call upon by all to undertake, has stoled its first year by and is gone, we are now greeting the new year of 2016, 丙申年(Byungshin Nyun), with great anticipation and hope. This year is called the year of the red monkey where it is said that the elements of yang, fire and the color red culminate and enables all things to be executed with a forward-looking and proactive outcome. As we enter such a vibrant new year, I sincerely wish for all in Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) to have all their endearing goals and hopes bear fruit for this year. As the university celebrates its 618th anniversary in the new year, SKKU is ceaselessly creating values derived from ‘the new value of the old’, by bringing together in harmony, tradition and cutting-edge field of studies, and, with the active support by our foundation, Samsung Corporation, we continue to proceed with pioneering and outstanding university innovation. Through these efforts, SW Centered University Support Program, Grand ICT Research Center Program, Self-Curing Environmental Concrete Research Center and more, have been selected as major government projects last year. Especially with the Brain Korea 21+ Project (BK21+) which is the core foundation for graduate school education and a research centered university, we have procured an outstanding 31 projects. Also we have repeatedly demonstrated unprecedented and spectacular achievements like becoming the NO. 1 private university in Korea at the Joong-Ang Daily University Rankings for the 3rd consecutive year, marking NO. 1. on the National Consumer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) for the 9th consecutive year, and completing the construction of the N Center, the world’s top level basic science research facility, and more. In addition, we have risen the ranks in the QS World Rankings to 118, while demonstrating to be the finest private university in Korea according to ‘Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings’ and ‘US News & World Report’s Global Universities Rankings’. This is especially felt by the active willing gestures for international cooperation from the world’s prestigious universities abroad. Such outstanding achievements in the midst of adversity was only made possible by the passionate participation and selfless support of the faculty, administrative staff, the foundation, the students and 210 thousand alumni’s heart warming affection for the university, in order to propel beyond being the best university in Korea to become a truly global leading university. So I would like to take this opportunity to express, from the bottom of my heart, my admiration and gratitude to each and everyone of you. People of SKKU! This year, we also are expecting an acceleration of change in the environment surrounding the university. The threats that we encounter are diverse and complex, such as the heated global competition between universities, the advent of a new education trend based on technological innovation, the growing demand from students and corporations as a comsumer and more. However, these threats in my view are no different from the opportunity that will further propel our university as we take on this new challenge. For those who are prepared there can be no threats but opportunities. One year ago when I was appointed to the presidency, I referred to you a quote from the Analects of Confucius, the chapter of Jaro (子路), “If you truthfully employ me, I will lay the foundations in one year and yield profits in three.“(子曰 苟有用我者, 期月而己可也, 三年有成). With this in mind I have concentrated to solidify the university, in my first year, based on the great legacy laid by my predecessors before me. And now for the next three years, in order to create a truly global leading university, we will be moving forward with the ‘New Challenge Project’ as follows: One, we will strengthen soft-wear(SW) education & fusion learning Two, we will concentrate and strengthen research by establishing ‘Research Troika’ and more Three, we will do our utmost to raise ‘Global Pride’ by expanding ‘Global Alliances’ Four, we will greatly expand industry-university cooperation through the ‘SKKU Enterprise Foundation’ and more Five. we will exalt pride of being the finest university, through ‘Innovation in Management’ and ‘Combined Leadership’ We hope that all of you will actively participate and show your support for our university’s new challenge. The dream that all in SKKU dreams with one heart and one mind, will always come true. Again I’d like to express my gratitude for the dedication and appreciation that all have shown last year, and wish for a year filled with a future that holds great achievements and happiness for all in SKKU. January 11th President of Sungkyunkwan University CHUNG KYU SANG

- SKKU makes big gain, provincial national universities take a favorable turn… in BK21 Plus interim ev
- It has been reported that according to the interim evaluation, results for Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and key regional national universities have improved significantly. On Dec. 23, Ministry of education and National Research Foundation of Korea announced the preliminary results of the interim evaluation on Brain Korea 21 Plus (BK21+)s Plan. Especially, unlike the first rounds of evaluation for BK21+ which was conducted in Aug. 2013, each university showed big differences and were greatly divided in the results. In assessing each universities’ total number of selected project teams during the BK21+ interim evaluation, Seoul National University(SNU) showed a steady and strong performance (35 ->40), while the most remarkable result was SKKU where 10 were added to the already 21, making total of 31. Thanks to this, the overall ranking of SKKU, based on the sum of selected project teams rose from 7th to 2nd place. Among provincial national universities, Chungnam National University (CNU) leapt from 12th to 7th, almost doubling its number from 12 to 23. Key provincial national universities such as Pusan National University(PNU) (total number 31, 2nd), Kyungpook National University(KNU) (total number 24, 6th), Chungnam National University (CNU) (total numer 23, 7th), Chonnam National University (JNU) (total number 21, 8th), and Chonbuk National University(JBNU) (total number 17, 10th) have shown good results, putting themselves in the top ten. On the other hand, Korea University (KU) which was second in 2013 with 29, shrank to 27, placing it at 5th after PNU (total number 31) and Yonsei University (YU) (total number 28). Meanwhile, to make the interim evaluations more impartial, the Ministry of Education conducted this Interim Evaluation in two stages. A total of 546 project teams were selected by having the top 50% of existing teams, 277 teams, retaining their status, 24 teams eliminated due to their significantly low assessment scores of less than 60% and 269 teams selected as Preliminary Selectee Project Teams, selected out of the 723 projects teams made up of the existing lower 50% teams and new entries. Through this process a total of 23.3% were replaced by 127 competitive new entries. More specifically 14.2%, 38 project teams, of large-scale and 31.9%, 89 project teams, of small-scale were changed. The Ministry of Education plans to conduct site inspections for the Preliminary Selectee Project Teams until Jan. 2016, and if they spot project teams of false or deliberately miswritten information, those project teams will be eliminated. Huh Jung, Head of the Talent Development Promotion Team in National Research Foundation of Korea, said “At the interim evaluation, budgets were reassessed even for the existing project teams.” Huh also added, “Exact budget for each university and business project will be announced on Feb. 2016, when confirmation notice is placed, after the end of the site inspections.” In addition, the Ministry of Education will continuously conduct a consultation based annual inspection beyond 2016, to support the project teams’ long term vision development, and encourage enhancement in the quality and outcome of the study and research. - SKKU, Steps up to No. 2 spot after Seoul National Univ. as preferred university
- Would the stronghold of ‘SKY’universities be come to an end? Sungkyunkwan University(SKKU) beat Yonsei Univ. and Korea Univ. and stepped up to No.2 as the ‘university that you would like to recommend.’ Especially, SKKU received overwhelming votes from present university students. On Nov. 16, SKKU took the 2nd spot with 10.5% of votes in a survey asking ‘Which university would you like to recommend to friends?’ conducted by ‘Hankyung-Realmeter Top 10 Brand.’ SKKU is the only university whose ratings were in the tens besides Seoul National University(SNU). In particular, SKKU received 32.1% from students in their 20’s who are mostly studying in universities presently, which beat SNU(10.6%), but under 10% in other ages except for 20’s. It is interpreted as receiving many votes from university students, who have a lot of interest in getting a job, due to the fact that Samsung Corporation is the Foundation for SKKU. The ‘absolute No.1’ SNU took the 1st place in all ages evenly with the exception of the 20’s group. Also, the total rating(25.7%) was similar to that of the votes from No. 2 ~ No. 4 combined. The two other universities in ‘SKY’, Yonsei Univ. and Korea Univ. took the 3rd and 4th with 8.9% and 7.9% respectively. In 30’s group, Yonsei Univ.(11.6%) received a big lead over Korea Univ.(6.6%). Following was Hanyang Univ. that took the 5th place with 6%, Ewha Womans Univ. is No. 6 in total with 4.4%.
