We are empowering education and research capabilities, which are core values of our business school, and trying to nurture the talented for student success and future value. Thus, we hired four new proficient teachers in the first semester of 2021, whose majors are marketing (1), management information (1), accounting (1), and finance (1). This time, I met Professor Yoo Sang-seok of <MIS Major>, a new teacher who became a family member of the business school, and listened to Main Research Activities, Majorities, and Plans.
Q1. Hello Mr. Yoo. It’s so glad to meet you. Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I'm Yoo Sang-seok. Before coming to Sungkyunkwan University, I received a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan, spent more than a year as a postdoctoral researcher at Syracuse University, and three years as an assistant professor at HEC Paris, France. I am thrilled to give lectures and research at Sungkyunkwan University, which is becoming a world-class university beyond Korea. Above all, I am very honored to be able to come back to school and become a member of the leap with the professors and talented juniors 20 years after entering Sungkyunkwan University as a student in 2002.
Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose it?
My specific major is Management Information Systems. Management information systems refer to various information devices and technologies used in corporate activities, studying the impact of these technologies on management fields and the consumers’ lives in various perspectives. Therefore, people majoring in management information systems have various academic backgrounds such as psychology, sociology, media, economics, design, and computer science. These interdisciplinary characteristics came as a great attraction to me, who majored in business administration and new media. In fact, when I go to the management information system conference, I have a wide range of discussions with scholars from various fields, including technology and society as a whole. Moreover, I am glad that I sometimes get creative inspiration from students who want to major in this field.
Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting a new business school at Sungkyunkwan University and your future plans.
As I told you, it is an honor to return to this school which I graduated. Moreover, Sungkyunkwan University's business school is famous for producing graduates with excellent research skills and ability, as is widely known in academia. So, on the other hand, I feel pressured that I should be of some help to this reputation rather than the personal glory. I want to contribute to lectures and research based on my experiences in previous schools that I was in before building a bird's nest here. In terms of research, I want to solidify my position in the field of artificial intelligence and robots that are growing day by day. I also have a dream to train students from our school so that they can stand out in international academia.
Q4. Please briefly introduce your class.
This class is "Industry and Culture Cross Management Seminar". Cross management is a new term for corporate management that is changing day by day thanks to various information technologies during the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this course, which is jointly taught by Professor Lee Kun-chang, we discuss the impact of new information technology, including artificial intelligence and robots, on workers' work performance, business activities, business ethics, and society from an industrial and cultural perspective. Interestingly, through hands-on practice of building and using simple robots and artificial intelligence, we are not only trying to make students find new perspectives on future management, but also trying to combine practical skills. So far, no student has been absent, and everyone is showing great sincerity in the debate to the point that there is not enough set time every time. I would like to continue to have interesting conversations with many students through this course.
Q5. What are the professor's research plans for the future?
My main area of research is the impact of robots and artificial intelligence on individual and team work performance and interaction. Currently, we are studying cognitive and psychological phenomena that occur when an individual receives instructions or advice on work through artificial intelligence. Another topic of my research is open collaboration. We plan to look at the open-source software development process from a sociological and behavioral perspective and continue to research on how to maximize the collaboration of individuals who voluntarily participate in these tasks and the role of companies in supporting them. Also, I look forward to finding new research topics in the future as I often have opportunities to discuss with other professors I met at Sungkyunkwan University.
Q6. Please tell us what you think the ideal educator looks like.
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin's brief and powerful sentence always makes me reflect on myself as an educator. I think a university professor is not just a knowledge communicator, but a knowledge producer who creates new values and meanings with students. In that sense, I hope that students will not take my lectures passively, but will become active participants and partners in knowledge production who think and inspire with me. I think an ideal educator should be able to bring out the best in students. Therefore, wouldn't it be another ideal educator to not be discriminated against by gender, race, language, age, major, values, etc., and to make efforts to create a safe classroom where anyone can confidently express their opinions?
Q7. Please tell something to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School.
Let's break it together!
