知彼知己, 百戰不殆. It means, if you know your enemy and know your self, you won't be in danger even if you fight a hundred times. This word in the pore of the Art of War would not be wrong to be substituted into the Republic of Korea in 2021, which is located between the powers. China is one of the countries that exert the greatest presence in recent relationships with Korea, whether positive or negative. Regardless of form and direction, we have no choice but to establish a relationship with China, and we need to respond wisely to this relationship. In this person focus, we met Professor Kim Yong-joon of the Department of Business Administration, who is the president of the Chinese Graduate School of our university. Professor Yong-joon Kim appeared on <Class of Difference> on July 15 and gave a lecture on the subject of 'Unveiling China's first-class companies'.
Q. Please introduce your self briefly
I'm Kim Yong-joon a professor of business administration at Sungkyunkwan University and the president of the Chinese Graduate School of Sungkyunkwan University. After receiving a doctorate in marketing and teaching at Sungkyunkwan University in 1991, I mainly studied and gave lectures on marketing strategies and started researching China at Cheonghwa University in 1996, and I have been doing research in China for 25 years, doing research and teaching in fields such as Chinese marketing and Chinese companies. In particular, as the US-China economic war and technology war began recently, I am studying and lecturing how changes have occurred in the supply chain in the global AI and big data industries around the world. Nice to meet you
Q. On July 15th, you appeared on 'Class of Difference' and gave a lecture on the subject of 'Unveiling the veil of a leading Chinese company'. Actually, I know that you also conducts major classes related to China. What are the characteristics of China in business management compared to other countries?
Business administration basically studies companies, non-profit organizations, and state agencies planning and implementing a series of strategies to achieve their goals and visions within a given environment, and develop feedback again to effectively manage them. Wherever go in the world, the government, business, schools, and hospitals have taken this approach, and since the 1980s, these management techniques have been shared mainly through MBA around the world. What makes China different from other countries is that China is a country that aims for China's unique market economy socialism. As a result, business activities are conducted under the involvement and guidance of the Chinese Communist Party and the government. Unlike the government, which companies deal with in a general free market economy, the Chinese government can make the final decision on the management and management of companies or provide guidance and regulation according to the direction of the country's development
Q. I wonder what the different is between teaching students and appearing on the broadcast.
It's been 31 years since I became a professor, and the lecture for students is basically for students to apply and take the professor's class, so the lecture is conducted with the professor's words accepted. Lectures through broadcasting or mass media are not decided by students to take classes in advance, so you can watch the broadcast whenever you want or turn it off it's not fun.(laughs) Unlike classes in which the professor's words are fully accepted, there is a difference in which the public can select the broadcast content. Therefore, the difference is that the broadcast should be well planned from the beginning, and especially when interacting with the cast, it is necessary to prepare a lot in advance for the individual attributes of the cast and what people can ask questions.
Q. You are serving as the president of the Chinese Graduate School of our school, and I wonder what kind of place the Chinese Graduate School is and what kind of job you are doing as thed Chinese Graduate School
Sungkyunkwan University's Graduate School of China was established in 2006. The main reason for establishing the Graduate School of China is to nurture human resources in need of professional manpower in Korea-China business, as well as Korea-China relations, especially business relations, which account for more than 25% of Korea's exports. In the Graduate School of China, Chinese professors teach classes in Chinese and English. It is a place where future talents are nurtured by specializing in fields such as business, consumers and finance that take place in China.
The weekday course of the program is a general master's course, so Korean and Chinese students take classes, and the weekend courses are mostly taken by business people, which are taught in Korean and Chinese. Multilingual classes are offered and students spend a semester or a year studying at universities in China such as Tsinhua University, Peking University, Renmin University, Fudan University, and Beijing Shincheon University. My goal is to experience and acquire knowledge directly in China through classes, so my biggest role is to achieve that goal as a director, and I have been doing this for six years now.
Q. What kind of student was Yong-jun Kim in college? I wonder what your dreams were when you were in school and what kind of college life you spent.
I entered college in 1978. At that time, Korea was a very dark period socially. When I went to college, there were almost no classes and demonstrated on campus. By the 4th grade, Korean society had grown very economically and so-called chaebols and companies were emerging, but socially, it was difficult because democratization was not progressing under the Yushin.
I thought it would be great to become a university professor during this time, to study business management according to corporate growth, and to be able to teach and research this to students. That's how I started dreaming of becoming a professor. Thankfully, after studying abroad, I became a professor in Canada and came back to Sungkyunkwan University and became a person who realized my dream. Many people feel grateful when they achieve dreams in their 20s, and I can be seen as such a person.
Q. I think the world that symbolizes business administration is 'innovation'. What do you think innovation is?
Innovation is fundamentally about changing. Technological change accounts for a large part of the changes, and 'how individuals and organizations adapt to technological changes,' is the essence of innovation. Now, the essence of innovation is 'Digital Transformation'. As we enter digital society, individuals, organizations, businesses, and government are digitizing around the world, and almost all the technologies for 'Digital Transformation' are available. There is a question of how an individual or organization acquires and utilizes it.
The advancement of technology is happening so quickly that it is being brought into our lives, but not in the case of humans. Not only people but also large corporations and organizations are more difficult to change. So, when we say innovation in business administration now, we can say digital innovation, and here, each individual or organizations should first acquire digital skills. The biggest issue in future business administration will be that we apply and utilize many changes in organizational culture and human relations created accordingly.
Q. What are your future research plans?
I've been doing research on Chinese companies. In particular, I mainly studied Chinese companies in field such as big data, AI, drones, electric vehicles, and autonomous vehicles related to the fourth industry. Recently, the U.S.-China war, especially the technology war, has caused many changes in the global supply chain.
As you know well, the global supply chain has been formed in this field as a model in which the U.S. provides original technologies and China experiments and commercialize applied technologies. That's why the United States is proposing to solve not only the original technology but also the production, manufacturing, and utilization of in the United States. In addition to China's response to this, an important issue is what kind of response policies governments and companies in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, which have played an important role in manufacturing and production, should implement in the future. In particular, Korea is between the United States and China, so it is necessary to make very wise decisions in the policies of the United States and China. I have recently been studying changes in the supply chain, especially in the AI industry, and am planning to study for the next three to four years.
Q. I wonder what is the most important thing in studying business administration.
Business administration and management are technologies used to manage and operate various types of organizations, and various methods are being introduced here. The first step in the nature of management is the process of reading and adapting to the environment. Therefore, when studying business administration, techniques such as accounting, finance, marketing, and organizational management are important, but you need to pay more attention to the organization's environment, especially technological and natural environment changes, demographic changes.
I think students who study business administration should study science and technology and environment. Many students study business administration for employment, but in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, it is common for good schools to study science technology, engineering, and humanities, and then learn business administration through MBA if necessary. This is because the essence of business administration is to read the environment well and respond to its changes. well and respond to its changes.
Second, management involves the process of communicating with people in an organization. In the process of communicating with others and providing services, self-reflection is needed. In particular, I think that how to communicate with people using information and technology will emerge as a big topic in business administration, as the digital field will replace many parts of AI. Therefore, I hope that our Sungkyunkwan University students can focus on building new digital knowledge such as AI, big data, and machine learning, and read global trends while studying or traveling in foreign languages.
Q. Lastly, please give a word of support and advice to business administration students.
As a professor, I am very sorry that business administration students have been enrolled for over a year, but they are not able to go to OT or MT and to communicate with professors offline naturally. I hope that the COVID-19 situation will improve soon, and through a lot of effort, you will find the direction of your life and spend a beautiful time with the academic traditions of Sungkyunkwan University and excellent professors of Sungkyunkwan University Business School.
In particular, I think the essence of university education is to exchange between seniors and juniors through clubs and conferences, build networks in them, and self-observation and reflection in their own way. Sungkyunkwan University provides many services and experiences in this area. On the one hand, I hope you will strengthen your capabilities in the field of digital technology.
Regardless of your major, I hope you can study coding, machine learning, big data, and AI fields so that you can show your abilities when offline activities return. It must be hard for all of you, bu I hope you have time to build your own capabilities. ‘Be patient and trust your journey.’ I wish you have a little more patience and have time to plan and proceed with your own journey.
