1. Hello, it is nice to meet you like this. please introduce yourself and the field you are currently researching.
Hello, I am Nam Ki-man who has been appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Changwon National University Business School since March 2022. I obtained my doctorate in February 2021 with a thesis titled "Relationship between Audit Time and Stock Price Collapse Risk - Focusing on Audit Time by position"(Advisor : Lee Jong-eun), and I am currently studying the field of accounting audit and financial accounting.
2. I'm curious about the process of being appointed as a professor at Changwon National University. Please explain the reason and process for applying.
In fact, looking at the professors and colleagues around me during the master's and doctorate programs, I always had doubts about whether this path was right for me or whether I could become a professor. That's why I think I spent my Ph.D. program with the mindset of "let's do my best for a given job day by day," rather than aiming for the job itself as a professor.
After I got my Ph.D., I took charge of lectures(management accounting, cost accounting, and government accounting) at Sunkyunkwan University and Suwon University, and finally I was appointed to Changwon National University. Looking back, I wasn't desperate, but I think I was able to get more results than I expected from graduation and appointment relatively quickly because I had a Ph.D. program with a relaxed mind.
3. Please introduce the research results presented by the conference or papers published in prestigious journals.
At the time of my doctoral course, I received the Best Paper Presentation Award for my research titled "The Effect of Comparability of Financial Statements on Realization Rate of Audit Contacts" at the 2020 Integrated Conference of 8 Association on Accounting and Taxation. This study was published in an academic journal called Accounting Journal as a result of working with colleagues in the Ph.D. program, and it is personally very meaningful because it received a good award as an excellent paper.
In addition, a paper titled “Voluntary Earnings Notifications and Post-earnings-announcement Drift” was published in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies(SSCI) after three years of work with Professor Choi Sun-hwa at Sungkyunkwan University at the time. I remember being very happy at the time of publication because it was a paper with many twists and turns and it was a completed paper that took a lot of time and effort.
4. Please tell me about your future research plan.
I'm interested in ESG(Environment, Social, Governance) which is gaining a lot of attention these days. Many companies carry out ESG activities on their own, but there are also many side effects. A representative example is green washing, which means that companies actually promote environmentally harmful activities as if they are pursuing eco-friendliness, and I would like to study in more detail how these opportunistic activities affect corporate performance and corporate value.
5. Please tell us about your ideal educator.
As I was taught by professor at Sungkyunkwan University, I was able to draw a picture of an ideal educator. There are many important virtues to have as a professor, but I think it is most important to motivate students to have confidence in themselves. Although there were many difficulties through the Ph.D. program, I was able to finish the course safely because many professors, including Advisor Lee Jong-eun, encouraged and supported me not to lose confidence. Like the affection and encouragement given by professors of Sungkyunkwan University to many students, I also want to be an educator who can help students achieve what they want on their own.
6. Lastly, please give advice to Sungkyunkwan University students and master's and doctorate students preparing for the professor.
What I want to say to those in the master's and doctorate programs is to think of your fellow teachers around you as colleagues who walk the same path, not as rivals. From my experience, no matter how good your skills are, there are limits to doing research alone. Therefore, if you share your thoughts with your colleagues and get feedback on them, I'm sure you'll better results than otherwise.
I think many students will have anxiety about the future, and many difficulties that come from it. I believe that good results will come if you always have a positive attitude and get help from your colleagues and professors. Thank you.
