MEST, ranked first in faculty securement rate · employment rate and other 8 areas
Big gap between Seoul · Rural universities …
In the evaluation of university competence carried out by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST), Sungkyunkwan University and Korea University received the highest scores.
According to the evaluation, among four-year universities located in Seoul, SKKU and Korea University both scored a total of 35 out of 40 in 8 criteria. Kyung Hee University received 34 points while Seoul National University, University of Seoul, Seogang University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University received scores of 33. Ewha Woman’s University and Chung Ang University earned 32 and 31 points, respectively. Dongguk University received 30, while Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Konkuk University and Soongsil University were all tied at 29 points.
This competence evaluation covers 8 criteria including enrolled student recruitment, faculty retention, employment, regular position employment, output of theses registrations on National Research Foundation of Korea, output of theses registrations in international journals, freshmen enrollment and student retention. The evaluation gives marks of 1 to 5 points for each criterion. In order to help students and their parents compare relative competitiveness, MEST has added the evaluation results to the section on academic information of its website. Until now, many outside sources including media companies have been rating universities by their departments. This is the first time that the government rated universities using an objective index.
SKKU got perfect score on the enrolled student recruitment rate, faculty retention rate, number of theses registrations in international journals and regular position employment rate, but it scored only 3 points on the employment rate. Korea University received full marks on the enrolled student recruitment rate, regular position employment rate, number of theses registrations in international journals, student retention rate. Korea University’s number of theses registrations for the National Research Foundation of Korea was somewhat low at 3 points.
Universities with good marks received high scores overall, but those with low marks were generally weak in faculty retention and employment. The gap between major universities in Seoul and rural universities was especially noticeable. The major universities got relatively high scores of around 30 points, while most of the rural universities earned around 10 points. One rural private university in Chungnam received one point in each criterion and scored a total of 8. Among colleges, Yeungjin College received the highest with 35 points and Yonam Institute of Digital Technology, Gyung Nam Provincial, Nam Hae College and Christian College of Nursing followed with 34 points.
The evaluation’s results are going to be used for the university restructuring that MEST is now working on. It is highly likely that the universities with low competences may be targeted for elimination. One MEST employee commented that “this evaluation is fair because it is based on an objective index”.
Meanwhile, the SKKU Business School was selected as a “Big 4” business school in the 2009 Business School Evaluation organized by Hankyung Business and M&C Research. This proved SKKU’s potential and excellence by getting ranking with traditional leaders as SNU Business School.
