- New Year’s Greetings from Rhee, Sang-ghon, Dean of SKKU Business School
- New Year’s Greetings from Rhee, Sang-ghon, Dean of SKKU Business School Finishing an eventful past year, I give greetings for the New Year now upon us. I hope that all families are filled with happiness and achieve everything desired. Along with that, it is my wish that the economy revives and everyone is able to make their dreams come true in the New Year. Looking back on last year, although the society was a little unsettled inside and out, the Business School promoted change and reformation. As a result, the School has succeeded in taking powerful steps toward becoming a global business school. Last year was very meaningful in that SKKU Business School firmly established its position as a Big 4 Business School in the 2009 Business School Evaluation. This provided an opportunity to widely demonstrate our potential and excellence. In addition, the School acquired international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB-International) as a first step toward becoming a global top 50 business school. Also of mention, nearly 800 Business School alumni gathered together in celebration of our School’s 50-year anniversary for the Night of Business Alumni held at the Shilla Hotel on October 14th. This event retraced the history of the Business School, and alumni resolved to help SKKU Business School make a leap toward becoming a globally recognized business school. All these achievements are the precious fruits of the alumni who are actively working in various social areas. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the alumni once again. It is the beginning of the New Year 2010. Many events are waiting ahead of us. I believe this year is the right time for SKKU Business School to share our scheme for development and to unite with the alumni to jump up to worldwide prestige. Among many pending issues, I will focus on enhancing the status of SKKU Business School by raising research outcomes to international levels through the improvement of our research environment and structure to boost professors’ competence for the development of the School. Moreover, the School will consistently extend its exchanges with prestigious overseas universities to provide a global mindset and high quality education to students. We will try to activate MOU contracts and exchanges with those universities to achieve our goals and to invite famous foreign scholars and professors to provide international-level education. Above all, I am asking our alumni to give consistent encouragement and support, while I will be making my best efforts to make this year a monumental year for SKKU Business School. Take care and happy New Year to everyone. Thank you. 2010.1 Sungkyunkwan University Dean of SKKU Business School S. Ghon Rhee

- Final Presentation & Lecture of Prof. David Day On December 3rd and 4th, a special lecture was held in the Business School on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus located in Myeongnyun-dong, Jongno-Gu. This lecture was given by Prof. David Day, an international lawyer specializing in negotiations. Prof. Day teaches at Hawaii University and is currently teaching two undergraduate courses and one Asia MBA course for the fall semester 2009. During the special lecture, SKKU Business School students gave presentations on how to do business in Asian countries based on the knowledge they had acquired. The presentation replaced the final lecture of the semester and all 100 students (including 20 foreign students) who took the three courses presented international business negotiation cases applicable not only to America but also to Asian countries. Especially for December 4th, Jo Byung Doo, president of Dong Joo Co., Kim Ik Rae, vice president of Deloitte Anjin LLC, Lee Dae Hyun, president of SeoSeo Galbe, Jo Young Gwon, vice president of Financial News and other alumni were present to encourage the students. A group of 4~5 students compared and analyzed each of the Asian countries and the U.S and presented global etiquette and negotiation methods for successful business and cultural and historical differences that need to be understood through various visual aids such as movies, pictures and statistics. For example, they presented that in the case of Korea, the historical background and issues with Japan and China should be dealt with and in the U.S., when they have important business negotiations, they prefer logical and direct speech. While lecturing during the semester, Prof. Day was impressed by the outstanding English ability of students, especially the bachelor’s degree freshman. He also was encouraged by the active participation of students offering their innovative and creative ideas. He added that these students are capable of working for not only domestic companies but also global companies like Apple and Google. - This Year, entering Business Administration expected to be tough
- In the year 2010, it is expected that conventionally preferred departments will be even more popular. On December 25th, Uway Chung Ang Education analyzed 45,000 examinee’s mock application through uway.com (www.uway.com), and the results showed that in 2010 the application for regular period business schools are expected to show the highest competition rate. Business schools accounted for 18.1% out of humanities division applicants in the mock application. It was lower than that of last year’s 23.0%, but still it was the highest preference. Each university’s unique schools and departments that offer scholarships along with other various benefits are also popular. SKKU Global Business Administration, for example, provides not only full scholarships but also dual degrees with Kelley School. Indiana University’s Kelley School is internationally prominent. US News and World Report ranked Kelley School 11th this year among US universities and ranked it 6th among state universities. Students can graduate in the U.S., and they can get all the benefits of internships, job fairs and job interviews that go to Kelley students. Also, the program guarantees employment at Samsung which attracts applicants continuously. Especially for humanities division, business studies have emerged as popular because of the establishment of the Law School. The tendency that top class students who used to apply for the Law School are now turning to business caused this phenomenon. Uway Chung Ang Education stated, “Schools with a Law School expected that free major will be very popular, but rather the Business major is filling the blank of the Law major.” This mock application is directly reflected in real application. For the year 2010 early admission, SKKU Business School recorded a high competition rate of around 80.24. 『Source – excerpt from Hankook Economics Nov 29. 2009 』 ● Reference : http://www.hankyung.com/news/app/newsview.php?aid=2009112548391&intype=1

- Global Business Administration, Junior Hwang, Soo Chan, speaks of GBA
- " Global era, GBA nurtures needed man of ability" Dual Degree with Indiana University Full scholarship and Lectures given in English with MBA level curriculum SKKU GBA established in 2008 is acknowledged as “luxury department.”It was an issue that when 7 students from Korean Minjok Leadership Academy(KMLA) enrolled in Seoul National University, other 7 of KMLA students enrolled in SKKU GBA. As students are not following ‘name value’ but ‘quality,’ interests toward specialized department are increasing. When first the administration was established, GBA junior Hwang, Soo Chan pursued practical interest over nominal one, overcoming bias and anxiety toward newly created department. Hwang introduced himself as “Global handsome elite” and showed pride and satisfaction as GBA student. Two years ago Hwang was accepted by department of oriental medicine in Sangji University, but he chose GBA without hesitation with the belief in the potential of SKKU. The biggest factor that attracted Hwang was the dual degree. He mentioned that the degree granted by Kelley School, Indiana University for studying there during undergraduate for one and a half year, and the fact that people from Kelley School come every year influenced his decision a lot. As global elite, he braced himself to enter Wall Street, not bound to domestic market. ● Source - http://news.mk.co.kr/outside/view.php?year=2009&no=651609

- KBS Na, SangYeop Project CP
- On December 3rd a special lecturer was held by Na, Sang Yeop called “Understanding Corporate Business with the CEO”. Mr. Na is the chief producer or project CP for KBS where he is in charge of all planning for KBS dramas. Mr. Na explained that making a drama is divided into two parts, planning and production. As CP, MR. Na analyzes drama trends and plans which pieces to produce later. Mr. Na has produced such popular shows as “Hometown of Legend”, “TV Literary Museum”, and “Cops”. Mr. Na has been influential in marking a new era in Korean drama history. Especially, he managed the drama “Sayugsin”, the first drama promoting the exchange of North and South Korean dramas. It took five years to finish “Sayugsin”, which was produced to commemorate KBS’s 80-year anniversary. It is meaningful in that it provides an opportunity to remind North and South we are one nation with one history, one language, and one culture. In addition, since it was the first to attempt to exchange North and South dramas, it holds historical significance in broadcast history. During the lecture, Mr. Na provided the audience with insights into his experiences, know-how of the drama business and interesting anecdotes that occurred in the 5 years of production. His witty words were enough to attract students.
