Greetings From Guy Because in most developing economies they are the predominant form of economic activity, from its beginnings GBSN has paid particular attention to what causes very small firms to grow. We worked for three years with Nigeria’s Enterprise Development Center, a remarkable institution, in creating a super-effective Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management. Later GBSN partnered with Goldman Sachs in their ambitious 10,000 Women program, which included the creation and/or strengthening of entrepreneurship education institutions across the developing world. While these efforts succeeded in enabling owners to grow their small businesses, no systematic research had been undertaken which might show whether and how better management might lead to growth. It is only a few years ago that a team of economists began to investigate the links between quality of management and development outcomes such as productivity and employment growth . >> Click here to read Guy's full article Headlines Upcoming GBSN Events Save the Date! 2016 Annual Conference November 7 - 9, 2016 Accra, Ghana For a second time, GBSN is partnering with EFMD to present a joint conference in Africa, co-hosted by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). - Paper of 2015: Prof. Hugh Kim’s Awarded Research Reveals Secrets behind Investor Inertia
- December 22, 2015 By: Marvin Ma; PR Committee of SKK GSB In his third year’s teaching and researching at SKK GSB, Dr. Hugh H. Kim recently won the Top Journal Paper Award from Korea-America Finance Association (KAFA), an academic group consists of scholars from top universities and research institutes in Korea and the U. S. The paper was also accepted by Journal of Financial Economics, one of the world’s top 3 finance academic periodicals, reaffirming its high quality in research and contribution to academic world. The Top Journal Paper Award is an annual award granted to outstanding research paper and its author by KAFA. The study, titled “Time is Money: Rational Life Cycle Inertia and the Delegation of Investment Management,” provided a creative and provable explanation to “investor inertia,” a puzzle in finance research for years indicating the seemingly irrational investing behavior of investors as they spend less or no time actively managing their investment portfolio. Dr. Kim and his co-authors, Dr. Raimond Maurer, Professor from Goethe University and Dr. Olivia S. Mitchell, Professor from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, developed a calibrated dynamic life cycle portfolio choice model accounting for the apparently irrational inertia behavior by incorporating the fact that investors must forego acquiring job-specific skills when they spend time managing their money, and their efficiency in financial decision making varies with age. People may optimally choose between actively manage their assets versus delegating the task to financial advisors instead. “People may elect optimally not to touch their investment portfolio for a long time because actively touch their portfolio may incur a huge time cost. The time spent on portfolio management could have been spent better on building up human capital in their job skill,” said Kim. Dr. Kim, the first author of the paper, currently an Assistant Professor at SKK GSB, joined this Korea’s best business school 3 years ago. The research not only provided rational explanations for an “irrational” behavior but also opened a new door to further researches. Additionally, the idea may also be applied to different field like other decision making process that may involve people’s behaviors on time allocation and cost. Balance between teaching and researching In fact, the research itself somehow illustrates part of a hardworking young professor’s life when dealing with heavy-loaded teaching tasks and research projects where both of them need a great deal of time to be accomplished. Dr. Kim was in charge of several core courses of SKK GSB, teaching foundational knowledge to a group of students who are diversified in age, background, levels of English, and so on. While students’ age range can be 20s to 50s and academic background from top business undergraduate major to art and music major, teaching can be a much more complicated thing than just delivering knowledge by standard lectures. Dr. Kim admitted it is a challenging task. “When I teach EMBA students who are with more experience and with their own understanding of life, textbook cases for them will usually get feedback like ‘this is not the real world works.’ Instead of teaching, I’d rather help let them talk and get to the answers by themselves.” Given the heavy teaching task, the other part of a professor’s professional life, research, becomes even more challenging while time is never enough in such a busy life. For Dr. Kim, he agreed the difficulty to find enough time to do both teaching and researching well, but he said that he has tried his best to find a way to synergize both and to create best outcome. After achieving an obvious great balance by winning a top research award while teaching one of the most heavy-loading course, Dr. Kim will keep his academic life balancing and synergized by further extending his research to different topic. “Historically, major finance theory has been focusing on the monetary cost and value,” he said. However, his interests lies on the non-monetary cost and value on financial decisions. He has done the paper regarding the time cost of investment management. “In my future research, I may work on the cognitive cost of financial management.”

[Alumni Interview] Carlos Gorito December 1, 2015 By: Maria Alejandra Varela; PR Committee of SKK GSB
If you’ve lived in Korea for at least a couple months and on top of that you are a foreigner, you’ve most likely heard of the show ‘비정상회담 (Non Summit); JTBC’. This weekly show features 3 Korean hosts moderating a debate between 12 foreigners living in Korea who speak Korean fluently. The debates cover current topics, but are specifically from the perspective of a foreigner. With this introduction, it is our pleasure to present to you Mr. Carlos Gorito; regular member of ‘비정상회담 (Non Summit)’. Carlos was a part of our Full-Time MBA Program Class of 2012 and currently works as the Education Advisor at the Embassy of Brazil in Seoul. Carlos first came to Korea in 2008 to complete his undergraduate degree through the country’s NIIED (National Institute for International Education) KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program). After his first year of learning Korean, he returned to Brazil because he felt that he really wanted to do more with the Korean language. When he graduated from his university in Brazil, he once again looked for opportunities to come back to Korea. This is when he found the SKK GSB program. At SKK GSB, he really found his home. He explained to us that when you research about different MBA schools in Korea, you will without a doubt find no other school with a more international atmosphere than SKK GSB. He said that it is a very unique program where you have many foreign and Korean professors who are obviously top notch. On top of that, you get a very international student body working together to get the most out of such a wonderful educational experience. Amongst his favorite moments, the one that stood out most was participating in the ‘Case Competition’. He really enjoyed the experience of coming together, discussing, and debating what would be the best solution for the case they were given. For Carlos, this was a defining moment in his MBA career. He also comments that his biggest learning experience was just growing as a professional. The learned sets of skills that SKK GSB gave him are basically the things he now applies spontaneously in his day-to-day life. The most obvious new beginning comes with his appearances on the TV show ‘비정상회담 (Non Summit)’, which he never even thought was possible. He enjoys sharing his ideas with the rest of the cast and also getting feedback from his fans. He doesn’t really feel like a celebrity, but at the same time he admits that people stop him a lot on the street and compliment him for doing such a good job on the show. He confesses that he cannot dance well nor can he play football well (as is usually expected of most Brazilians), but he is very passionate about representing his country and defending what it means to be a true Brazilian. Finally, when asked why other students should consider coming to Korea, he replied without hesitation, “Why not Korea?” From the moment we met him, his love and passion for Brazil, Korea, and SKK GSB proudly stood out throughout our interview. - 2015 SKK GSB Homecoming Day

Homecoming Day at SKK GSB: A Time to Celebrate Our Close-Knit Community November 5, 2015 By: Rachel Dockery; PR Committee of SKK GSB
On October 21, 2015, the SKK GSB family gathered to raise a glass, share a meal, and celebrate the Annual Homecoming Day of the MBA program. Executive MBAs, Professional MBAs, and Full-Time MBAs all joined the festive evening, rekindling old friendships and igniting new ones. Over 100 students, faculty, and alumni departed from their weekly schedules to show their love and appreciation for their brothers and sisters in the SKK GSB community. The program for the evening began with Dean Jae Ha Lee providing updates on the latest school news, presenting awards to outstanding alumni council members, and giving insights on the direction of the program. Two guests from Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Executive Associate Dean for Academic Programs Ash Soni and Professor Eric Richards, addressed the diverse crowd of attendees to congratulate SKK GSB on its Homecoming Day and express admiration toward the global nature of the program. The evening concluded with an elegant performance by former professional pianist and current Full-Time MBA student Ms. Jeong Min Song on piano and professional musician Ms. Kyungah Jung on violin. Homecoming Day also marked the launch of the new alumni donation program. Now in the eleventh year of the program, SKK GSB has seen considerable alumni support in recent years. In order to foster continued growth and maintain its strength as a top-tier global MBA, the school is requesting that recent graduates give back to their alma mater. The school received donations within the first week of the program’s inception, demonstrating the strong sense of school loyalty and support among program graduates. As successful as the event was, the major advantage of the evening did not come from the programmed events or from the launch of the donation program, but rather from strengthening the brotherhood and sisterhood among alumni and current students, domestic and international students, and students from each of the three MBA programs. <2015 SKK GSB homecoming Day - Group Photo> See the Homecoming Day Video (Click) -

- Promotion of Professor Minjung Koo
-
Last September, Professor Minjung Koo was promoted to Associate Professor of Marketing at SKK GSB. On September 10, a congratulatory party for her promotion was held in the SKK GSB conference room. Prof. Jae Ha Lee, Dean of SKK GSB and around 20 of her colleagues and staff gathered and celebrated with her. The promotion of Professor Minjung Koo is very meaningful in that she has passed a very strict evaluation process. Also, this is first case in SKK GSB history where an Assistant Professor who started her career at SKK GSB has been promoted to Associate Professor. Professor Koo published several papers in Top Tier journals, and won a Teaching Excellence Award by getting an excellent teaching evaluation from students. Furthermore, she contributed highly to promote SKK GSB both inside and outside of the school and provided exemplary service. Professor Koo will take a year’s sabbatical and focus more on her own research. She is expected to enhance the name value of SKK GSB more with her outstanding research and teaching performances and abilities. -
