Stina Tam, FMBA Class of 2022, is taking up her role as the newly elected president of the Full-time MBA student government. Here Stina shares her story and talks about her plans as FMBA class president.
Q)Where are you from, and where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I am a Chinese Canadian! Montreal is the French part of Canada. So, I do also speak French!
Q)Any interesting and fun facts you want to share with us?
I like hiking! I don’t consider myself a very sporty person, but upon arriving in Korea and discovering that the land is filled with 80% of mountains, I came to like hiking! I can now say that hiking became one of my favorite hobbies.
Q)What was your major in your undergraduate college? Did you always want to go to business school?
My undergraduate major was marketing, with a minor in sociology.
To be honest, I had no concrete plan to go to business school. But studying the field of business has always been in the back of my mind since a very young age, thanks to my parents, who own a restaurant.
Q)Why did you choose to pursue an MBA degree in Korea?
Back in 2016, I came to Korea as an exchange student and found myself falling in love with the country! Therefore, I wanted to further my career goals in Korea by pursuing my MBA degree here. I am glad that I can combine my interest in business with my interest in Korea.
Q)What drew you to SKK GSB? What was the key part of the school’s MBA program that led you to choose this particular business school?
I researched many of the business schools in Korea. Upon learning about each school’s program courses and academic networks, SKK GSB became my top choice. It became more certain after I interviewed with SKK’s dean, as I received the feeling that the staff do value students and want to nurture them into great talents.
Q)What excites you most about getting your MBA at SKK GSB?
The opportunity to meet an extensive network of people from across the globe and from different fields and industries!
Q)Please share your first month of SKK GSB experience.
My first month at SKK GSB flew by like the speed of lightning because everything happened just so quickly. But I was able to settle in Seoul well, and I got to meet amazing classmates during the orientation. So far, it has been a smooth transition.
Besides, thanks to the opportunity of learning Korean before the program, my everyday life in Korea is very nice. I am able to do things on my own without any difficulties and even adapted to the “quick (bbali-bbali)” culture.
Q)Why did you want to join the Student Government?
From the very moment when the president from the Class of 2021 came to talk to us during the orientation about his role, I knew I wanted to bring positive contributions to the Class of 2022 as the next president. Despite the current pandemic and the many changes required to adapt to the “new normal,” I wanted to join the student government in order to ensure that each student gets the best opportunity to network, feel included, and have the best possible experience during the program.
Q)What would you like to accomplish as FMBA president? Your goals and objectives?
One of my goals as a class president is to make sure that everyone in the Class of 2022 feels represented and can reach me if they need help. Secondly, I hope to create opportunities for the FMBA cohort to socialize and expand their networks, not just within the university but also outside.
Q)Can you share your plans for the year?
I have plans to hold small gatherings to mix up the groups of people so that they can truly get to know each other. One example is to have cultural exchanges for international students to learn more about the Korean culture and for our fellow Korean counterparts to experience diversity in the classroom. Given the challenges under the COVID-19 pandemic, I also plan on Online Mini Job Fair or a Zoom Movie Night, where all students can join online and still have a great time together.
Q)Where can people get in touch with you?
Always welcome to message me on my LinkedIn! I enjoy meeting new people and learning about them!
