- Production and distribution of key vocabulary book (Korean-English-Chinese) for foreign students
- Our university has produced and distributed key vocabulary book to enhance academic achievement of foreign students who have difficulty in learning because they do not understand unfamiliar and professional major words. The vocabulary was produced by extracting 3,707 vocabulary words from eight major major books and translating them into 'Korean-English-Chinese'. It was classified as an accounting, management information, marketing, and management major, and was translated and inspected by a master's/doctor of general graduate school, a master's degree in Chinese, and a full-time professor of business/Chinese graduate school. Ahn Hee-joon, head of the business school, said, "When I first studied English, I look forward to seeing you accepting this vocabulary with the excitement of memorizing words by looking up dictionaries. I hope you can grow into a better global talent through the vocabulary." In addition, the business university will plan a program to enhance the learning ability of non-contact foreign students by producing continuously available contents.

- Professor Bae Jun-hyeong of Management, Published in the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ impact factor: 7.571).
-
A paper by Professor Bae Jun-hyung of Management at Sungkyunkwan University's Business School was published in the April issue of the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ Impactor: 7.571). AMJ was first published in 1957 and it is a prominent academic that ranked 8th in Management Journal and 10th in Business Journal. The paper published this time contains what investment decisions large companies make when investing in venture companies established with spin-outs. I met Professor Bae Jun-hyung and listened to a brief article related to the thesis. Q1. Hello, Professor Bae Jun-hyeong, Please introduce yourself and your reasearch area. I'm Bae Jun-hyeong, majoring in management at the business school. I am interested in topics related to cooperation and competition among companies based on management strategy and entrepreneurship. In particular, I am interested in making decisions in the alliance and equity investment between large and small ventures, entrepreneurs of venture companies, and technology innovation. Q2. Please give me a detailed introduction to the journal and thesis published this time. Recently the paper 'How technological overlap between spinouts and parents firms affects corporate venture capital investments in spinouts: The role of competitive tension' that I researched was published in Academy of Management Journal. In this paper, I looked at what investment decisions large companies make when they make a CVC investment in a venture company established with spin-out. Spin-out refers to a venture established independently by an employee of a large company who left the company. Existing studies show that spin-outs grow successfully compared to other venture companies based on their experiences while working for large companies (mother companies) where founders used to work. However, this study considered the negative aspects that spin-out companies might experience due to these resources. In other words, if spin-out pursues technology development similar to its parent, the parent company may be hostile to spin-out in the marketplace, which may hinder the possibility of other large companies investing in spin-out. In addition, the more aggressive a parent's tendency to protect its intellectual property rights, the less likely it is that other large companies will invest in spin-out ventures.
Negative relationships can be seen that the stronger the parent company's tendency to protect intellectual property rights. On the other hand, there is an incentive for other large companies to invest in spin-outs. By investing in spin-outs, other large companies can indirectly acquire information about their parent's technology and ongoing research and development. Based on this logic, this paper also considers the possibility that other large companies can gain competitive advantage from spin-out investments. For example, if another large company pursues technology development similar to its parent company, or the parent company's technological innovation capabilities are excellent. In this case, we suggest that the technological commonality between spin-outs and parent companies may reduce the negative effect on the likelihood of CVC investments in spin-outs by other large companies. In this study, it was able to prove the research model by analyzing information and equity investment data about the founders of venture companies in the medical device industry in the U.S. It can be seen that negative relationships may decrease if large companies considering equity investments seek similar technology development by their parent companies. If the parent company's technology is excellent, it can be seen that negative relationships can decrease. Q3. What did you find difficult (or difficult due to variables) during the study? There are many difficulties, I want to tell two things. The first is the process of thinking logically and writing the idea so that the reader can understand it well. I always thought about whether there were any errors or overlooks in developing the logic of my hypothesis and argument. In the process, it was difficult to revise the paper several times. The second is data collection. As I said before, this paper requires information on the past experience of venture company founders. It took a considerable amount of time and effort to collect the past experiences of the founders of about 900 venture companies directly through various databases. Q4. Please tell us about your future plans regarding your research activities. We will continue to conduct various research in areas of interest. If I have a chance, I hope I can study with my school students who are interested in research and help them. -

- Global Business Administration, Wins Top 5 at Global Hedge Fund Competition
- Sungkyunkwan University (President Shin Dong-ryul) announced on the 4th that the Global Business Administration, Ahn Chi-seung, and Jung Joon-hyuk (team name Kangnam Billionaire Association, GBA) won the Top 5 Finalist Award for the first time in Korea at the largest Quant Hedge Fund Competition for college students worldwide on April 23. This competition is a competition in which hedge fund managers evaluate the potential by looking at new quant investment ideas and backtest results proposed by students. They won the final project in the "Current Topics in Finance" (Kim Young-han, concurrent professor Choi Hyung-kyu), which was opened under the theme of "Data Science in Finance and Hedge Fund" in the fall semester of 2020. Twenty-eight prestigious universities, including London Business School (LBS), Duke University, Texas Austin University, the University of Southern California, UNC Chapel Hill, Indiana University, and the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, participated in the preliminary round. In the final, LBS's Ph.D. students won first place, Texas Austin University's second place, North Carolina's University of Chapel Hill's masters third place, and our university students and Swiss graduate students won the finalist award. Despite being undergraduates, students of the Department of Global Management displayed their skills and stood shoulder to shoulder with master's and doctorate students of world-class universities. The over-reaction strategy proposed by the students is an advancement of the existing stock market's overreaction to ultra-short trading hedge funds, it was praised for its ingenuity in capturing investment opportunities by utilizing big data by trading entity that can only be secured in the Korean market. The students received special guidance from Professor Joseph KIM of the College of Business to increase their English presentation skills ahead of the competition, and practiced presentation and Q&A with Hong Kong's Quant Fund managers, including Invesco's Dr. Sung Chang-hwan and Wi-Intercept's co-chairman Lee Dae-young with the help of Professor Choi Hyung-kyu. Although they could not go to the U.S. due to COVID-19, students were able to meet talented people from all over the world through Zoom to compete for ideas and broaden their insights by directly receiving advice from U.S. Quant hedge fund managers. 출처 : 한국강사신문(http://www.lecturernews.com)

- Interview with S-ONE, the Society of Management Strategy, about an cooperation with Hosik Dumari Chicken
- In April, Sungkyunkwan University's Business Strategy Society S-ONE and Hosik Dumari Chicken (CEO: Hong Yoon-won) signed an industry-academic cooperation agreement. S-ONE, the management strategy society, and Hosig Dumari Chicken will launch new menus and revitalize marketing, including product launch STP strategies based on food trend analysis and market situation analysis, and differentiated advertising strategies. I met with S-ONE of the Management Strategy Society regarding the conclusion of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Agreement and heard more about it. ▲ Management Strategy Society s-one & Hosik two chicken industry-academic cooperation concluded 1. Hello^^ It's so nice to meet you! First, please introduce S-ONE, the management strategy society! Sungkyunkwan University's No. 1 Management Strategy Society S-ONE was established in 2003 with the goal of fostering management professionals who demonstrate leadership in all areas of society. S-ONE is recruiting about 12 academic members each semester under the activity of learning strategic thinking and gaining hands-on experience, and is now coming down to 35. In addition, S-ONE has about 250 seniors so far, and they have entered various fields of society such as strategic planning, consulting, marketing, and sales based on their strategic thinking and practical experience. 2. First of all, congratulations on signing the industry-academic cooperation agreement! How did you participate in this industry-academic cooperation project? S-ONE has a systematic curriculum called the track system. Tracks A and B engage in strategic thinking through book sessions and Harvard Business Case studies that learn logical thinking in the first half of the year before the midterm. After the midterm exam, Track C has been engaged in practical activities to solve problems by applying strategic thinking learned in the first half directly to the company's situation. We are working on industry-academic cooperation projects with at least two companies every semester, and this industry-academic cooperation project with Hosik Dumari Chicken is being carried out as part of Track C activities. ▲ 2021 Management Strategy Society, S-ONE, Hope you get to know each other project. 3. What kind of proposal (project) did you made to Hosik two chickens? After each semester ends, a demand survey will be conducted on academic members during the vacation to select a list of industries and companies that want to conduct industry-academic cooperation together next semester. After that, we contact the company by preparing a detailed explanation of the conference and a proposal to introduce the award performance. At this time, I emphasize what benefits the company can get through industry-academic cooperation with S-ONE. In the case of Hosik Two Chicken, it is the fruit of specifying the proposal by focusing on the food industry by reflecting the results of the demand survey by the academic members. As a result of appealing the case study experience in the food industry and suggesting specific topics such as 'New Menu Launch Strategy', we can proceed with the project. After a review within the company, we will conduct the project this semester under the theme of 'New Menu Launch Strategy' and 'Marketing Strategy to Appeal Soy sauce chicken'. 4. What other projects or activities are you working on at S-ONE? In more detail, Freshman, a first-semester member, learns the basics of strategic thinking, strategic thinking, and internally produced projects such as complete books on Track A, and Junior, a second-semester member, identifies the company's real problems through Harvard Business Review Case studies on Track B. After the midterm exam, members of the first semester and the second semester will team up to carry out Track C, an industry-academic cooperation project. In addition, Expert, a member of the third semester, voluntarily participates in a contest or conducts Track D, which conducts industry-academic cooperation with seniors of the academic society. In addition, S-ONE has prepared a variety of activities to make friends with seniors and academic members, including a five-minute speech on management-related topics, a meeting with seniors, a homecoming day, a picnic, MT, and hope to get close. ▲ 2021 S-ONE session of the Society for Management Strategy 5. Lastly, please say a word to those who want to be with S-ONE, the management strategy society. S-ONE is a well-known academic society in school that is difficult. As a result of my experience, I have to do many activities and spend a lot of time on S-ONE. However, it can be said that such activities eventually serve as a foundation for logical thinking and strategically addressing corporate challenges. S-ONE will be the best choice for Sungkyunkwan University students who want to achieve no regret for three semesters. In addition, if you are curious about S-ONE, you can visit http://www.s-one.or.kr/, the association's official website, or https://www.instagram.com/skkusone/, the association's official Instagram account, to check out various activities. 6. What do you want to say to my business classmates? The same may be true of other business associations, but there are many things that it is difficult for our students to conduct industry-academic cooperation with companies alone. Due to the challenging semester, the curriculum has changed with other schools, making it difficult to proceed with industry-academic cooperation with academic associations of other universities. It is true that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find companies that can cooperate with industry and academia. In this case, I hope the school will work harder so that I can help the industry-academic cooperation project with the company. I think that S-ONE's more competitive growth than other schools' academic societies can have a good impact on Sungkyunkwan University through active cooperation and help with the academic society. Thank you. ▲ 2019 S-one Homecoming Day Related articles from: https://www.hankyung.com/economy/article/202104143023a

-
We are empowering education and research capabilities, which are core values of our business school, and trying to nurture the talented for student success and future value. Thus, we hired four new proficient teachers in the first semester of 2021, whose majors are marketing (1), management information (1), accounting (1), and finance (1). This time, I met Professor Yoo Sang-seok of
, a new teacher who became a family member of the business school, and listened to Main Research Activities, Majorities, and Plans. Q1. Hello Mr. Yoo. It’s so glad to meet you. Please introduce yourself. Hello, I'm Yoo Sang-seok. Before coming to Sungkyunkwan University, I received a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan, spent more than a year as a postdoctoral researcher at Syracuse University, and three years as an assistant professor at HEC Paris, France. I am thrilled to give lectures and research at Sungkyunkwan University, which is becoming a world-class university beyond Korea. Above all, I am very honored to be able to come back to school and become a member of the leap with the professors and talented juniors 20 years after entering Sungkyunkwan University as a student in 2002. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose it? My specific major is Management Information Systems. Management information systems refer to various information devices and technologies used in corporate activities, studying the impact of these technologies on management fields and the consumers’ lives in various perspectives. Therefore, people majoring in management information systems have various academic backgrounds such as psychology, sociology, media, economics, design, and computer science. These interdisciplinary characteristics came as a great attraction to me, who majored in business administration and new media. In fact, when I go to the management information system conference, I have a wide range of discussions with scholars from various fields, including technology and society as a whole. Moreover, I am glad that I sometimes get creative inspiration from students who want to major in this field. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting a new business school at Sungkyunkwan University and your future plans. As I told you, it is an honor to return to this school which I graduated. Moreover, Sungkyunkwan University's business school is famous for producing graduates with excellent research skills and ability, as is widely known in academia. So, on the other hand, I feel pressured that I should be of some help to this reputation rather than the personal glory. I want to contribute to lectures and research based on my experiences in previous schools that I was in before building a bird's nest here. In terms of research, I want to solidify my position in the field of artificial intelligence and robots that are growing day by day. I also have a dream to train students from our school so that they can stand out in international academia. Q4. Please briefly introduce your class. This class is "Industry and Culture Cross Management Seminar". Cross management is a new term for corporate management that is changing day by day thanks to various information technologies during the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this course, which is jointly taught by Professor Lee Kun-chang, we discuss the impact of new information technology, including artificial intelligence and robots, on workers' work performance, business activities, business ethics, and society from an industrial and cultural perspective. Interestingly, through hands-on practice of building and using simple robots and artificial intelligence, we are not only trying to make students find new perspectives on future management, but also trying to combine practical skills. So far, no student has been absent, and everyone is showing great sincerity in the debate to the point that there is not enough set time every time. I would like to continue to have interesting conversations with many students through this course. Q5. What are the professor's research plans for the future? My main area of research is the impact of robots and artificial intelligence on individual and team work performance and interaction. Currently, we are studying cognitive and psychological phenomena that occur when an individual receives instructions or advice on work through artificial intelligence. Another topic of my research is open collaboration. We plan to look at the open-source software development process from a sociological and behavioral perspective and continue to research on how to maximize the collaboration of individuals who voluntarily participate in these tasks and the role of companies in supporting them. Also, I look forward to finding new research topics in the future as I often have opportunities to discuss with other professors I met at Sungkyunkwan University. Q6. Please tell us what you think the ideal educator looks like. "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin's brief and powerful sentence always makes me reflect on myself as an educator. I think a university professor is not just a knowledge communicator, but a knowledge producer who creates new values and meanings with students. In that sense, I hope that students will not take my lectures passively, but will become active participants and partners in knowledge production who think and inspire with me. I think an ideal educator should be able to bring out the best in students. Therefore, wouldn't it be another ideal educator to not be discriminated against by gender, race, language, age, major, values, etc., and to make efforts to create a safe classroom where anyone can confidently express their opinions? Q7. Please tell something to the students who are studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University Business School. Let's break it together! -

- Lee Jun-seok, a student of business administration, founded GO EAT, a customized menu matching service.
- "Every time I go out on a date or meet a friend for a meal, I wonder what to eat. It was hard to find a satisfactory menu for both. So I thought it would be nice to have a service like YouTube, Netflix, and Watcha that combines their tastes with a mobile application." Lee Jun-seok (23), who is majoring in business administration at Sungkyunkwan University, started his own business by dreaming of Netflix in the restaurant culture industry. GO EAT, which was set up in March last year, has 12 college students, including Lee, planning team, development team, design team, machine learning and algorithm team. Sales have not been generated yet because they have not started full-fledged services, but their goals are grand. "I want to create a world where we have no choice but to use 'GO EAT' when eating out or ordering delivery food. Lee began to be interested in starting a business after experiencing a two-night and three-day start-up camp when he was a freshman in college. Lee had fun creating things with his own hands. Rather than working for others, I wanted to pioneer my own life. Even if he goes back to my freshman year, he wants to learn coding to do better in business. To college students who want to start a business, Lee says, "Let's try it for now." "GO EAT is still in its infancy, but I dare advise you, don't think about it at first, just try it. No matter what anyone says, you're increasing your chances of success in your idea." Next, Mr. Lee will answer question one by one ▲From left to right, Lee Jun-seok, President of GO EAT, Jeong Na-hyun in planning team, Song Ji-eun and Kim Seong-yeon in design team [Picture = GO EAT] Q. Please introduce GO EAT. A. In short, it is a new customized menu matching service. It analyzes users' tastes and situations and matches menus and restaurants with algorithms and machine learning. Like Netflix and Watcha, the more users use the app, the more accurate the menu matching is. At first, it will focus on marketing on users to secure the number of users, and later provide partnership services with restaurants. Q. Why did you choose the menu matching service as a business item? A. I often thought about what to eat with my girlfriend when we were dating. When I met my friend and ate out, I was worried about what to eat. I was always worried about what menu I could enjoy with the other person. Eating should be fun, but if you don't like the menu itself, it's not a perfect meeting. It's hard to find a satisfactory menu for both, to say the least. The other person's pleasure can be halved if he or she tries to eat the menu I want on purpose even though he or she is not willing to care for me. So I thought that if there is a service that combines the tastes of the two through mobile applications (apps) and matching them, they can both quickly and comfortably choose a common preferred menu. Q. When did you start your own business? A. Start-up activities began in earnest in March 2020. Sungkyunkwan University Campus Town Start-up Care Center's tenant company program helped GO EAT establish itself. Start-up was interested when he experienced a start-up camp at a university when he was a freshman. I participated in the start-up camp for two nights and three days with my major motivation, and it was so fun to create something with my own hands. And as I retook the college entrance exam, I felt it was better to carve out my life on my own than to work for someone else. Q. How did you raise the capital for the start-up? A. There was about 9 million won in capital for the start-up. 4 million won was raised through stock investment, and 5.5 million won was collected from subsidies provided by the start-up competition and Sungkyunkwan University Campus Town. In the future, we're going to get help from government-backed projects and attract investment from Angel Venture Investment. ▲From left to right, Kim Jeong-cheon, Jeong Jeong-bin, Im Min-young, Yeom Sang-hee in development team [Picture = GO EAT] Q. How many team members are with you? A. Currently, two in planning team, six in development team, two in design team, and one in machine learning and algorithm team are gathered. I'm glad I met some great people. I felt that the most important thing in a start-up was to gather team members who had the right will and willingness to end it patiently. In particular, I was a business student, so it was difficult to recruit developers. Thanks to my current team members, I was able to create the best team. Q. How is the market responding to GO EAT? A. The survey found that 251 out of 276 college students (91%) think about the menu when they eat out." 73 out of 101 college students (72%) who used prototypes said they would use GO EAT rather than Baemin, Yogiyo, and Mango Plate if the app was officially released. When the app was released on Google Play Store in February this year, 1,000 people signed up in a month. As part of marketing, we released a psychological test called ‘What would I be if I were a food ingredient?’ and 53,000 people have participated. Regarding the business model, a survey of restaurant owners showed that more than 70 percent were willing to review it positively. Q. When was the most difficult moment in the business? A. We had to hire team members in each field, but we only picked one side a lot, so the development progress was very slow. It's because I was ignorant of app development. As app development did not go as planned and faced difficulties, a large number of team members left. That was the hardest time. The most important thing when starting a business is people. If even the people who make the app don't have faith, no one will use it. Q. Is there a moment when you see a chance of success? A. 53,000 people participated in the marketing psychology test. GO EAT's official Instagram followers exceeded 1,000, and the number of GO EAT app users has exceeded 1,000 so far. When we did a market survey about our business model, we got a positive response and we're looking forward to it. Q. What is the nature of the GO EAT business? A. GO EAT is a new Netflix-like menu recommendation app and coupon stamping app. It is essential to recommend the menu to users according to their tastes and circumstances. The business model plans to receive expenses in the name of customer referral fees from the restaurant when users who subscribe to GO EAT service regularly scan their QR codes while paying after meals at the restaurant. If QR code 'Stamp' is used more than a certain number of times, GO EAT will refund 100% of regular subscription cost to users and accumulate points. Q. Is there anything you wish you had known before starting your own business?\ A. It's a shame that I found out about the preliminary start-up package too late. I think it would have been better if we had prepared faster and raised the capital. And when I started my own business, I would have created a network of talent first. Q. What activities do you want to spend more time on if you go back to college as a freshman? A. I would have double majored in software or joined a coding club so that I could do coding myself. Coding is not mandatory to start a business, but knowing coding gives you many possibilities. You don't have to be good at coding like an app developer. However, if you know how to do coding, you can understand more deeply how many people should be selected in which field, what qualifications should be selected, and how to distribute and plan tasks. Q. If you give advice to college students who want to start a business? A. We're still in the early stages and we've barely started, but I dare advise. The most important thing is not to think at first, but just try. Also, I think it's good to read interviews or autobiographies of those who succeeded in starting a business. It is important to know how they succeeded and how they acted. And no matter what anyone says, you need to change your idea little by little to make it more successful, believing that there is a possibility of success. What I first planned was 'Famous Restaurant Online Virtual Standby Service'. I continued to pivot and now I'm settled as an idea. Q.What is the most worrisome and scary thing about start-up activities? A. I want to be with my current team until I make a more complete product. I'm most afraid of Goit's team members leaving. I'm not even in a position to pay now. What team members want most is achievement. If there is no proper result for this release, we are worried that we will be able to finish it off. Q. Do you have Plan B in case the business didn't go as planned? A. No. I feel like I'm in a jam, but I want to focus on this first. Because it can be an opportunity that comes only once in your life. Q. Do you have a role model? A. Kim Bong-jin, the representative of BAEMIN. I see him after starting my business, he is a great man. In particular, Kim Bong-jin's persistence and efforts seem to be an inaccessible area. After ten years of hard work, the current BAEMIN has been created. I think what famous entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs have in common is persistence that never gives up rather than genius. Q. What's your goal for this year? A. When college students are thinking about what to eat, they should turn on 'GO EAT'. ▲ GO EAT [문광민 기자] [ⓒ 매일경제 & mk.co.kr, 무단전재 및 재배포 금지] 출처 : https://www.mk.co.kr/news/business/view/2021/04/377777/
