- [Student Success Story] Choi Yeon-su (Business 17) Student Interview.
- Sungkyunkwan University's College of Business is discovering and supporting creative students with comprehensive thinking, not just excellent grades, with the aim of discovering the role of first mover and role model for student success. Students who actively help various in-school activities and Sunkyunkwan communities or have made challenging research and learning plans and achievements are selected as creative scholarships and scholarships are awarded. Choi Yeon-su received several excellent grades scholarships during her undergraduate years, and she developed her skills by selecting classes such as presentation, cooperation, and discussion, which are areas she could do well. She also participated in various external activities such as English discussion competitions and lectures through English discussion clubs, and multiple majors in cognitive science through self-design convergence majors. Let's listen to Choi Yeon-su, who is currently preparing to study in the U.S. and wants to try to start a business if she has a chance. ▲ Participation in 2017 Startup Festival 1. Hello, pleas introduce yourself first. Hello! I'm Choi Yeon-su, a business administration major who graduated last summer. To briefly introduce myself, I am interested in various studies and my hobbies are cooking, discussing, and writing. I've been able to feel a lot and grow more through various activities over the past four years, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to share these with my business school classmates, and I hope my interview will be of any help! 2. I heard that you won the Student Success Award-Dean Award at the 2021 degree conference. Please give us a brief acceptance speech. I'm very honored to receive a meaningful award given to only one person at the business school. In particular, I heard that the professors reviewed it themselves, and I sincerely thank you for highly evaluating my past activities and visions. Thanks to this, I will continue to be progressive student in achieving my goals. ▲ The English debate 3. You have been engaged in various internal and external activities such as English discussion clubs and double majors in self-design convergence majors, so please introduce the activities you have done so far. Additionally, please introduce the most memorable activities. I have been engaged in various activities for four years in college, and representative activities include participation in English discussion clubs, participation in various lectures, multiple majors in cognitive science through self-design convergence, and in-depth research through two excellent undergraduate research credit systems. First of all, I was able to think logically about various topics and practice expressing my arguments convincingly in English through SKEDA, an English discussion club in the second grade. Also, through this experience, I was able to not only improve my English skills but also broaden my perspective. In particular, it was a valuable experience to establish various perspectives on social important topics because I had to consider the validity of my arguments and give appropriate opinions. Furthermore, I learned about the Seoul Open English Discussion Competition through SKEDA, and I was able to participate in the Seoul Open English Discussion Competition to achieve positive result as a Finalist. As the Seoul Open is a big competition involving foreign students, it seems most meaningful that we were able to actively interact with each other while discussing in English with various foreign university students from around the world. Next, I participated in various academic events and lectures provided by Sungkyunkwan University. If you go to the school bulletin board, Sungkyunkawn University invites experts from various fields to give lectures, and I often listened to lectures at school when lectures on topics of interest were held. While listening to lectures by various experts such as management, psychology, science, and philosophy, the best thing was that I was able to face new questions and think about them. Listening to various lectures, I became interested in the field of cognitive science, and I hope that business school students can expand their interests by listening to various lectures held at school. After listening to various lectures, I became interested in the field of cognitive science that studies the human brain and mind. Therefore, I wanted to study more in the undergraduate class, but I was personally very sorry that there was no department called cognitive science at Sungkyunkwan University. However, as part of convergence education, there was a self-design convergence major system provided by Sungkyunkwan University, so fortunately, I was able to major in cognitive science twice through this. Since the self-design convergence major supports students to design their own departments and curricula, if the field of interest is not a convergence study that has not been opened as a department, it would be good to consider multiple majors. In fact, I have done various activities, but the most memorable activity among them was the experience of participating in the excellent undergraduate research credit system. With the approval of the professor, the credit system for excellent undergraduate student is a program that allows you to conduct in-depth individual research on the field you are interested in and be recognized as credits for a semester. Of course, the research credit system is mainly conducted by the College of Natural Sciences, but I participated in research in the fields of natural science and philosophy once each. I mainly explored the "liberation and determinism" that I was interested in, and it seems to be the most memorable because it was a rare opportunity to conduct in-depth research beyond the undergraduate level on one subject. ▲ Lecture 4. You received several excellent grades scholarships when you were an undergraduate, do you have your own secret? In fact, rather than having my own secret, I was lucky to continue to perform well because I took classes that I was really interested in and passionate about. Good grades are based on someone's evaluation, so I don't think your skills and efforts alone guarantee good results. I also plan to get a certain grade in each subject before the start of the semester, but it doesn't always go my way, so I then to consider what I want to get in each subject. For example, I think presentation, cooperation, and discussion skills are very important, so I set my goal to develop those skills further in undergraduate classes. Therefore, I tried to improve my presentation and discussion skills by taking classes with a lot of presentations and discussions and interacting with various people. In particular, in the case of business administration classes, there are many presentations and teaming classes, so I tried to use them as an opportunity to further develop what I personally wanted to improve while taking those classes. Then, I think the efforts to show and improve a lot of moles in undergraduate classes probably helped me get good results. ▲ SKKU Summa Cum Laude (Choi Yeon-soo) 5. What are your future careers and goals? It's not decided yet, but I'm currently preparing to study in the U.S. because I want to study more about cognitive science and philosophy that I'm interested in. Also, while studying business administration for the past four years, I have a big goal of becoming interested in startups and trying to start a business if I have a chance later. 6. Lastly, please give advice to your classmates at the business school. Lastly, when I was a college student, I had a lot of thoughts about my college life and future, and I would like to briefly convey what I felt through my college life to my juniors who will have similar concerns. When I talk to my juniors, many students feel pressure to achieve a lot of results during college students, and I think they are thinking a lot about how to do well in college life. To be honest, I don't think there's a manual for "good college life". It would be nice to be able to prove myself to the world through many achievements, but I think the most important thing is to think more deeply about who I am during my college life and to have time to discover myself through various experiences. There are many opportunities and changes in the world, but if you lack an understanding of yourself, I think it is difficult to use it correctly and live the life you want. However, it it true that getting to know yourself and pursuing your goals without wavering are not as easy as they sound. To do this, you need a chance to experience various things. Of course, you can't easily create some opportunities, but it's not like you don't have any opportunities around you. You can experience various things through the school bulletin board and ask for advice from seniors or professors. It's good to be able to achieve what you want through the opportunity you have in your hands, but even if you don't, I hope you can create opportunities to achieve what you want! I hope my interview was of any help to my business school classmates.

- Student Jeon Yi-hoon (Business 19) Interview on the selection of President's List.
-
Jeon Yi-hoon (19), a business administration student, was selected for the President's List awarded to "Su-Gi-Chi-In"(Self-Cultivation and Governing the People) student who spread positive influences to others and communities through self-directedness, creativity, and fostering a spirit of challenge. He was selected as a creative scholarship student at the business school in 2020, and has been active in various fields such as Data Youth Campus, Impact Base Camp, LINC+ Business Group Startup Club Selection, and Service Learning Program. We met Jeon Yi-hoon, who is the representative of Team Dearsk and wants to find his own color, to hear more about the student success story related to the selection of President's List. 1. Hello, I heard that you have been selected as the President's List since the last selection of creative scholarship students. Please tell us how you feel. *Interviews on the selection of creative scholarship students : Reading the news board([Student Success Stroy] Jeon Yi-hoon(Business Department 19) Creative Scholarship Interview) / Business School (Korean) (skku.edu) Hello, I'm really happy to achieve another achievement I really wanted to achieve before graduation. I had a hectic day on the day of the awards ceremony because I had a lot of other schedules, but now that I'm here with my classmates, I realize it. It's a little late, but I'd like to thank the dean for finding out my potential and creating a good opportunity. As a side note, when the selection guide came, I was in the library, and I remember trying to get our without making a sound of footsteps. Luckily I was able to get out before the phone hung up!
2. I'm curious about the process until you were selected as the President's List. For what reason did you apply and how was the selection process? I already became a student who is about to graduate, and I wanted to verify myself to see if I had a good short school life. To summarize my story, about half of my experience in Team Dearsk, and the other half of my experience was to find and challenge my favorite job. In the former, I developed practical management experiences that were difficult to obtain elsewhere, and in the latter, I tried to find my aptitude and increase my value by encountering various fields. Rather than continuing to study alone, I think finding a point of exchange with other students and finding a job that can have a good effect on society as a result fit well with the model of "Su-Gi-Chi-In" There are two main ways to select PL : the Student Success Story Contest organized by the Student Success Center and the application through each college. I applied for the former job, but unfortunately, I wasn't selected for the final interview. At this time, I received a lot of feedback from the Student Success Center, and based on this, I worked harder on the PL application selected by the business school, and thanks to this, I think I was able to get a second opportunity. 3. You are engaged in various activities such as participation in the Student Success Story Contest, selection of LINC+ business start-up clubs, and service learning, and please explain the activities you participated in. "Let's do anything without being tied to the field!" was my goal in 2021. It's because I thought that this is the best time to find my aptitude. If there was ant activity I wanted to do, I would rush in and experience it, and in the process, I would like to discover myself. This year's "Team Dearsk" aims to establish a system. I felt that I needed a more firm system because my online activities were longer and my work was complicated. Team members who sympathized with the goal helped a lot by introducing collaboration tools suitable for our situation and setting up work manuals using their majors and experiences. At first, it was a waste of time to organize things that were not visible, but at this point, I feel that it is improving work efficiency much more. In the first semester, we planned and operated a flogging event called "Sseu-Gi-Chi-In" with the school affairs team. As the name suggests, it is program designed to practice the spirit of "Su-Gi-Chi-In", and it is designed so that participants can participate in flogging to train their bodies as well as contribute to environment purification and revitalization of the local community. I was very proud to give good value to society by interacting with not only enrolled students but also local residents and self-employed people nearby. *Link to the program 'Sseu-Gi-Chi-In’ Another field I'm interested in is data science. This summer, I participated in the Data Youth Campus, an education run by the Korea Data Industry Promotion Agency. More in-depth learning outside of school was provided, and above all, opportunities to participate in the project were provided, which helped me develop my skills. <'Impact Base Camp' Big Work Team Meeting to analyze the survey results.> Recently, I participated in the "Impact Base Camp" course of "Route Impact" that runs "Heyground". It's because I wanted to develop problem-solving skills by running various projects. Here, we studied ways to increase the user reconnection rate of the step donation app "Big Work," and we were able to logically organize the process of their departure after listening to user's voices and design an app prototype to improve them. Although it is a particularly popular activity for students interested in social impact, I think it was a process to clearly judge their strengths and weakness even if they were not. 4. Were there any difficulties during various activities due to COVID-19? I wonder how you overcame it. I have more help from others than I have achieved great overcoming myself. To be honest, I think myself had more shaking and retreatment. I think I thought thousands of times, "I wouldn't have suffered this if it weren't for the current situation". It seems to have been particularly difficult to bond with those who work together in an online environment. As time goes by, it seems necessary to trust each other and be open to help. In the process of sharing your weaknesses and filling them up, we were able to get a lot of good solutions from others. Dearsk relied on KakaoTalk to share the work situation, but it was common to forget because all tasks were exchanged only through online channels. We shared these difficulties without hesitation, and thanks to the introduction of online collaboration tools by other team members, we seem to be solving many things without forgetting. Whenever I go out to a difficult place, I can't speak well. For me, the current situation of "non-face-to-face" was a great opportunity. No matter, how difficult it is, it'll be done in my comfortable room with the other person trapped in the monitor. So I tried harder to meet many people this time, and I feel that I was able to use it as a chance to overcome my phobia. 5. I'm curious about your appearance in 5 years and 10 years. What is your future career path and goal? On the other hand, I'm very proud of having various experiences without being tied to the field, but on the other hand, I'm a little worried because I didn't find a clear career path. However, I am looking back on my past experiences and selecting keywords for the moments I liked, and I think "business administration with data literacy" is the answer. For example, it would be in fields such as finance, consulting, and production operation management Now, I want to prepare myself to become a valuable member of society by carrying out activities tailored to the keyword. Rather than imaging myself in the future already, I always want to enjoy that moment by finding the right fields for me little by little as I do now. 6. Lastly, please give advice to your classmates at the business school. The time has come when we need powerful tools to represent ourselves. I am confident that no one can deny that the unintentional COVID-19 situation has accelerated the emergence of a non-face-to-face society. In the future, there will be fewer opportunities to reveal yourself in personally. We need to be able to capture someone's heart even if we don't meet each other. Your skills, results, and insights can be the solution. In any way, I hope you can develop your own technical and logical capabilities. I'd like to add a little practical advice. Last semester, a new "Visual Analysis of Management Data" lecture was established, a class to learn a data visualization tool called "Tableau". It was very beneficial because it was very helpful not only for various types of data but also for other external activities. It's a class that recommends classes to students who want differentiated hard skills! -

[New Professor Special] 'College life is an important time to decide your career.'
-
Our college of Business is strengthening its core values of education and research, and is striving to nurture talents for student success and future value creation. To this end, three new teachers were appointed in the second semester of the 2021 school year, their majors were marketing(1 person), management information(1 person), and FinTech(1 person), and they were invited to be teachers with excellent competence in each field. This time, we met Professor Kim Dae-jin of
, a new teacher who became a family member of business school, and listened to 'major research activities, majors, and future plans' Q1. Hello, professor. Nice to meet you like this! Please introduce yourself, professor. Hello, I'm Kim Dae-jin, majoring in Fintech Convergence and Finance from the 2nd semester of 2021. I worked at UNIST in Ulsan until the last semester and then I became Sungkyunkwan University. I graduated from the Department of Trade in Business School. After graduation, I worked as a bond fund manager for Hyundai Investment Trust Management and Kyobo Investment Trust Management for seven years, and decided to study abroad in 2005, earning a master's degree in statistics at Stanford University and a doctorate in business administration at Vanderbilt University. And I was appointed to UNIST in 2014 and worked until last semester. Q2. Please briefly introduce your major, and what made you choose your major? I am currently a member of the Fintech Convergence Major and Finance Division, and I study market microstructure, derivatives, and portfolio management in the field of finance, as well as corporate governance and corporate finance. Recently, I am interested in studying various problems of finance using machine learning and natural language processing techniques. The reason I became interested in this field was that I was most interested in finance since I was undergraduate student, and after graduation, I naturally became interested in the field of research after working as a bond fund manager in the market for a long time. Also, while working at science and technology institution such as UNIST, I became interested in the field of fintech by conducting convergence research and education on engineering and finance. The market microstructure my most basic research field, is a research field in finance that studies the mechanisms of the market, the pricing process, and the behavior of market participants. In general, the price and value of an asset should be the same, but market prices may not reflect the value properly due to various factors and systems in the market. Typically, many asset pricing models assume that investors can immediately buy and sell the assets they want regardless of size However, that's not the case with the real market. For example, the price gap between the buyer and the seller always exists and is not constant, sometimes there is an upper and lower limit system, and the securities market we trade in cannot be traded 24 hours a day. In other words, liquidity does not always exist in the market, and in many cases, investors bear direct or indirect transaction costs. Therefore, my study analyzed how these various factors affect the price of assets or the behavior of investors and conducted a study on how to create a fair and efficient stock market. In addition, recent technological advances are promoting the convergence of traditional financial and IT industries. Traditional financial companies are changing through the development and launch of new products and services using various technologies, and non-financial companies are also attempting to provide various advanced financial services based on new technologies. Therefore, my research direction is also very interested on how various artificial intelligence and newly introduced machine learning techniques can solve various problems dealt with in existing finance, and how technological advances affect investor protection and fair market formation. Q3. Please tell us how you feel about starting anew at Sungkyunkwan University's business school and your future plans. First of all, I am very honored to be a professor at a prestigious university such as Sungkyunkwan University. Above all, I think it is most important to raise the reputation of the school and cultivate great students through good research and lectures. If the status of the school increases through good research, we will be able to invite better researchers, and if good students are produced through good education, we will create an environment where better students can come. After all, I think providing good research and good education, which is my original mission, will help the development of the school. Q4. Professor, please briefly introduce your class. I'm in charge of investment theory in the undergraduate department and financial machine learning in the graduate school. The most important content of undergraduate investment theory is portfolio composition and asset pricing theory. Basically, the portfolio composition starts with determining the ratio of risk-free and risky assets. So, while dividing risk-free and risky assets is simple, at what rate should we organize numerous assets in the market? In particular, can we use numerous risky assets to create one representative risky asset that all investors can agree on? So how, is the return on such risky assets or the risk premium determined? These have been studied by many financial economists, including Markowitz, Sharpe, Merton, Scholes, and Fama, who won the Nobel Prize in Economics. The investment theory will learn the content easily. In addition, graduate school subjects teach various machine learning techniques and how to apply the contents to financial data. Q5. What are the future research plans of the professor? Professor Zingales, a professor at the University of Chicago In 2015, Zingales, a professor at the University of Chicago, gave a keynote speech titled 'Does Finance Benefit Society?' in which 57% of people disagree when asked if financial innovation leads economic development. Although the financial industry is a very important industry among national industries, the public's perception of financial institutions or the financial industry is not favorable. Looking at the recent series of financial scandals, I don't think Korea will be very favorable either. Professor Zingales' argument is that academia should conduct research and education to reduce this difference. The mission of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) aims to protect investors, promote capital formation, and maintain a fair, orderly and efficient market. In other words, the financialist's research goal is not much different. Through my research, I will find problems that can harm investor protection, create a financial market that can facilitate capital raising and investment functions of companies and individuals, and find systems and rules to create a more efficient and fair market. Recently, the financial market has been changing from a market that relied on the judgement and ability of traders and operators in the past to a market where new trading techniques and portfolio composition based on various high-tech artificial intelligence techniques are generalized. In line wiht these changes, My research field is also expanding to research on unfair trade detection in market usin artificial intelligence, suggesting the development direction of ETF and derivatives markets through index development using text and image data, and research to resolve market information imbalances through the use of various markets and corporate-related big data. The development of artificial intelligence technology can lead to new findings of phenomena that have not been observed in the financial market or new implications in the financial market due to the use of artificial intelligence, so there is a growing need for research that can look at new topics that have been studied in finance and suggest directions. Therefore, my research direction aims to design a fair and transparent market according to the changes in various financial markets caused by new techniques such as artificial intelligence, suggest directions for asset management or trading techniques, and create a fair and transparent market through new types of investment behavior analysis. Q6. Please tell us about the ideal educator you think of. In many cases, I try to emphasize understanding and utilization rather than memorizing. With the development of the internet and information and communication today, it is not that difficult to learn much about finance. However, it seems to be a different problem to use various theories in combination with actual data. For example, when calculating stock volatility, standard deviation is usually used using past yield data. By the way, how should we use the data for which period? There are many formulas in finance. But how will it be used in the real market? Many formulas are all over the internet. Even if you look up complicated formulas, you'll find them all. The question is, what variable should be calculated and how to obtain a desirable A? And for what economic reasons should the formulas be derived and only do so? I think it is important for ideal educators to use it and provide education that can induce students to think their better in addition to delivering knowledge. Q7. If you have anything to say to students studying hard at Sungkyunkwan University's College of Business, please tell them. I think I understand the concerns and goals of business school students as I graduated from business school and worked for a long time in a financial institution. Business schools enter various industries compared to other majors. In a way, business majors are very wide, so it may not be easy to focus on a specific field. It's very important to understand what the company you're working for is doing and what products and services you sell. I hope you develop your expertise accordingly. Imagine what kind of talent you want to work as in society or business after graduation. If you get a job in a specific industry after graduation, it's not easy to move to another industry. It is not easy for friends who went to the financial sector to move to the manufacturing sector or for friends who went to the manufacturing sector to move to the financial sector. It's possible to move to a company in the same industry (of course, you have to have excellent expertise), but it's not easy to change industries. Therefore, your first job after graduation will be a very important decision to determine the rest of your life. As college is an important time to decide on the rest of your career, please clearly set your career goal and boldly pursue it. Finally, my lab is open at any time, so students who want counseling or who are interested in financial institutions are always welcome. -
